I've only watched a few episodes, but here is my take:

- The screens/graphics are super annoying.
- Although I like Hasan Minhaj, I find his jokes and presentation a little too rehearsed
- I was under the impression that Netflix was backing away from these sort of "current affairs" shows because it doesn't fit their model. For example, the 2 episodes that we watched were on the affirmative action lawsuit, which was fine because it is topical for this season - not RIGHT NOW. But the second episode was about Saudi Arabia and the Khashoggi murder. This made sense in late October 2018, but will it be useful a month from now? A few months from now?

- John Oliver had an excellent Saudi Arabia piece last week but Hasan Minhaj's take was not dissimilar. At first I was annoyed that they were so similar, but I think that it is possible that Hasan Minhaj will reach an audience for whom John Oliver is not cool. So maybe this is okay.

I watched the first two and largely thought the same stuff I do about John Oliver's show; it took a long time to tell me mostly stuff I already knew.

I didn't know the full story on the affirmative action case, so I appreciated that episode walking me through it.

His line about it being a "woke TED talk" really nailed it for me. I liked it, but then, I prefer well-polished standup to improv, or even to a good standup trying out new material.

I was under the impression that Netflix was backing away from these sort of "current affairs" shows because it doesn't fit their model.

I thought that too, but Netflix committed to something like 32 episodes of this. I don't know whether they'll all be weekly, or they'll drop a couple at a time, but it seems like they're shooting for something closer to the Oliver model than the Michelle Wolf slightly-more-talk-show-esque model.

I don't care how many times a topic was covered by someone else's show. Were these other people brown people, with the perspective that brings? Were they offhandedly making brown people jokes? No? Then bring it, handsome brown dude with an American accent.

Case in point : There is no way that any of the jokes in the affirmative action ep would have been okay coming from a white person. (Full disclosure: I'm pretty conflicted about the Harvard lawsuit - I have been standing there when profs from that school explicitly stated their "fear" of their classrooms becoming too Asian. Racism is not exactly a secret there.) But, it is effing RADICAL to have a brown guy call out our uncles in support of other underrepresented minorities (where there have historically been massive racial tensions of our own across a lot more of the globe than just the US.)

And I'm pretty dang sure that it's impactful to hear a Muslim American talk about how other Muslims see Saudi Arabia.

Also, he and Tanvir made the cutest promo for this show, though I kind of hate the outfit he ended up with.

It's a lota and you can make one from a plastic bottle.

We've been trying to break that Taylor Oil leak story for 7 years! So glad it's finally getting some airtime.
