I've been discussing Saga for the entire year with my comic book club, volume by volume, and there'd sometimes be faces when I would talk about The Will or Marko, and I knew someone died through some sort of osmosis. So I wasn't shocked. But still.

AUGHUAUGHAUGHAGH

I love looking at how Hazel is growing up, and the way she and Squire are so different (this was also my favorite part of issue #48. Squire's been sheltered in ways that Hazel has not, and Hazel's showing her trauma in a very believable way. She's angry. She doesn't take separation well. But she's shocked by the idea of child abuse.

Her relationship with the adults is great, too - I still love the way that Petrichor deals and cares for her, almost despite herself.

Also GHUS. So many good Ghus panels.

Oh man, the Saga hiatus has been killing me.

I am a big fan of BKV’s writing but I often feel like he loses interest part way through the story and I am a little bit worried that that’s what is happening here. I’m hoping that he’ll come back from the hiatus ready to bring his best to the second half of the story, because the first half was fantastic.

He's wrapping up Paper Girls this summer, I'm still hopeful that he's giving himself a breather and thinks about how he handles the next arc. Paper Girls went on a short hiatus this winter, too - and originally the Saga hiatus was scheduled to be 'about a year'. We're at the year point now, so who knows.

But also, you've got to feel for Fiona Staples. She's been doing all of the art for 54 issues - the inking, the coloring, the lettering. It's a lot.

I just reached the end of Volume 9, and WHARRGARBL. That last couple of deaths had better not be for real, or I'm going to be very disappointed.

Still, though...I guess I can cope if they are. Somehow. But if anything happens to Lying Cat--or worse, Ghüs--I am going to get a pitchfork and torch and burn the world to the ground.
