Dammit, Trip. That sucks. Losing Raina is disappointing as well, but I think she was supposed to be a bit character for a few early episodes only, so we got more of her than was originally planned.

That could easily have been a season ender. They compressed a whole year into 10 episodes, and there's still the back half of the season to go. Very impressed.

Kyle McLaughlin is supremely awesome in this. Love that there's no redemption arc for Ward, or if there is it's extraordinarily long-game.

Did they do anything with the thumb drive? Or is that a storyline for the second half?

Man, there's a lot crammed into that episode, and this year overall, but it oddly doesn't feel rushed to me.

Kinda disappointing. An hour later and all we've learned is Skye's name, that she's really special, now people know she's really special and there's more than one obelisk.

Kyle MacLachlan's impotent rage face was utterly delicious.

Raina = the girl with the flowered dress. Skye = Daisy. Could they be half-sisters?

Ack, no show until March? I have high hopes for Agent Carter, but I'm going to miss this show.

I know BJ Brett's availability was probably part of the choice to write him off, but boo. And Simmons is going to be very sad. But Mack has been freed from possession, yes?

Kyle McLaughlin needs to have some sort of special award created and presented to him. He is crazypants in the best way possible.

Skye just shot Ward! Just up and shot him!

Yeah, I don't think Raina is dead - her coating/sheath cracked as well and we saw somebody with very different eyes and quills? Whatever, it looked very different than Skye.

Loved Skye shooting Ward; I added "Don't leave them alive behind you" to her "Don't turn your back on the enemy speech." Should've done a headshot on the way by, dear.

Was disappointed to see Whitehall go. As a villian, he was very villany.

So long Trip.

Like I've said before, I really think that a tight all-killer/no-filler 10-13 episode season (such as those done primarily on cable) is ideal for serialized television, and I'm ecstatic to see AoS (and in turn network TV) start to embrace the idea of doing two mini-seasons in the space of a single long one. I'm feeling pretty amped up for the show's return in March, which is kind of the opposite of where I was with this show at the same point last year.

An hour later and all we've learned is Skye's name, that she's really special, now people know she's really special and there's more than one obelisk.

Well, we did also learn her dad's name, "Cal", which points us firmly to him being Calvin "Mr. Hyde" Zabo from the comics, which in turn means that Skye is actually his daughter Daisy Johnson, AKA Quake.

I was a little disappointed that the terrigen mists weren't blue. But I welcome the Inhumans into the Marvel tv universe. It's going to be a lot of great episodes in the future.

And that line by Koenig was just awesome.

It might have less to do with the actual temple design and more with the fact that Skye's Terrigenesis apparently gave her earthquake powers.

And that line by Koenig was just awesome.

I enjoyed how Koenig wasn't just tormenting Trip (aw, Trip.) but also trolling the more literal-minded section of the fanbase, the sorts of nerds who honestly thought that Cloverfield was going to be a Voltron movie and that hoverboards were real because Robert Zemeckis said so one time.

Geez, Trip. It's not a finale of some sorts for a Joss Whedon touched show that doesn't end with someone's death.

I think one of the best moments in the show was when Skye straight up shot Ward. No hesitation, just, "Gun!" BAM! BAM! BAM! Poor psychopathic Ward, never saw it coming, so far as he likes to wear body armor under his clothes for good measure. I give Skye a pass for not finishing him off, as three shots into the abdomen at that angle probably should have penetrated his lungs and other vitals, and well, she was distracted what with her anger management problems dad, Whitehall's Hydra troops, and Raina.

Is there a reason why Trip didn't succumb to the same city defenses as Mack? Was it really just a matter of not touching the intricately carved lines in the floor? That was a distraction.

I hope the aftermath of this is FitzSimmons back together for good. They were finally communicating!

Kyle McLaughlin's character, Cal, kind of came across as a man crossed with a three year old. Take something away from him and he goes berserk/temper tantrum on steroids. I'd hate to be a waiter serving him and reach for his plate before he's done. I never could quite decide if he was simply overacting or acting at just the right level. Would he have had a chance against Whitehall who pulled a gun? (He obviously thought so)

So we have other Kree Keys, if they're not shot to pieces do they revert back to form or are the others still waiting similar uses? Guy with no eyes, post-change? Suggestions on who he is?

Open ended plot point award goes to the flash drive that was made a big deal of and then disappeared as quickly as it did into a pocket.

I'm curious as to what's next for Ward and Agent 33. Mercenaries? Another branch of Hydra? All the people who "complied" were they simply loyal to Whitehall and now are aimless sheep waiting for a new focal point?

I was pretty satisfied overall with the second season's first half, it definitely has me primed to see the fall out occur next spring, and absolutely ready for Agent Carter.

I hope they set Ward up as a third faction leader. We've had A.I.M. in Iron Man 3, so they can use that property, for example. Putting AIM and Hydra in competition against SHIELD makes the strange bedfellows angle. Or they could keep him independent or start a whole other organization.

Reddit's got a pretty good theory that Tripp isn't dead but is actually the Inhuman known as Hollow.

Terrigen Mists turning a bunch of people into superpowered Inhumans is a great way to get the metahuman count up to make the Civil War plotline work in the MCU.

I have a little trouble believing one shot from Coulson's .40 would take out the guy who's been enjoying the benefits of the fountain of youth for the last 50 years.

Minor detail, but costume really nails that not-dirty-but-soiled, unkempt-but-still-trying look for Skye's dad.

He's totally dead; he wasn't cocooned like Skye or Reina. He turned to ash like all of the other people killed by the obelisk for being 'unworthy'.
posted by His thoughts were red thoughts at 2:30 PM on December 10, 2014

Well the Redditor's idea is that if he'd turned insubstantial (like how Skye and Raina involuntarily manifested their powers) that it would appear as if he just crumbled away.

Although I do agree that his looked more like the killed-by-the-Diviner look than the cocooned-by-Terrigin-Mists look.

I wonder what he was doing on the Age of Ultron set, then.

I agree he's TOTALLY DEAD.

In the way that Marvel characters are totally dead.

Meaning totally dead for now.

(I am absolutely okay with this.)

I know that the people producing this show wanted me to scream with joy like an idiot when Skye shot Ward the way she did, but that does not take away the joy of that moment one bit.

I was preparing to do what (much to my wife's annoyance) I always do in cases like this, which is to yell "JUST SHOOT HIM" at the TV whenever somebody has weapon and a big-bad nearby doesn't -- but Skye beat me to it, reminding me why this is one of my favorite shows. I am surprised that nobody has figured out what Rayna became; it seems like there should have been enough of a clue in those few frames to get at least a guess at her transformation.

Hah I totally called Tripp's death as he was running around the city, maze, thing (not much of a city, really. 10 minutes to circumnavigate a good chunk of it?). Once he showed up in the chamber with them I was like, yupp he's dead.

No way is Whitehall dead though.

Skye shooting Ward! Coulson shooting Whitehall!
posted by BungaDunga at 7:32 PM on December 10, 2014

My thought is that Whitehall is dead. He was already living on borrowed time (from Skye's mother) and as much as Skye's mom's special ability to stay forever young didn't save her the second Hydra began carving her up for educational purposes, I think likewise, neither is any power to become young again stolen by Whitehall going to stop him from dying when a bullet by a trained marksman (Coulson has to be an awesome shot) rips through vitals.

You have the battling forces of Whedons vs Marvel, one likes to kill people off ignominiously and let them stay dead, the other refuses to let people die. Coulson came out on the side of Marvel, but I don't think Whitehall has that kind of pull. He's been Whedon'd.

This is a concern, yeah. She has been so much fun in the pursuit of her goals, but it's necessary that she shifts gears now that she has them, and that may or may not be any fun.

(I'm hopeful because she's been so great up 'til now. I really appreciate an unaffiliated character with a clear goal that they'll screw anybody over to reach. I've also loved that about Evil Ward and Psycho Dad.)

My thought is that Whitehall is dead.

Agreed. HYDRA remains in play without him anyway - their whole schtick is that anybody is expendable without giving the organization a moment's pause. I think it would be actively counterproductive to bring him back, even though he was pretty fun.
posted by mordax at 1:04 PM on December 12, 2014 [1 favorite]

As to Raina, the biggest issue (to her) is going to be that she looks different. A person who took such obvious care in their appearance is going to feel strongly about that appearance changing. She could be pleased with the change, but I suspect not. The flower dresses were a touch of vanity that she'll have trouble adjusting if she can no longer wear them.

Can someone explain the significance of Daisy Johnson without making me read a bunch of Marvel Fansites? I take it this is a big deal and the whole point of the show up to now?

Daisy Johnson's a legit superhero called Quake (because she has earthquake powers). And no slouch, either - she's teamed up with the Avengers, she's beaten Magneto, she's even been the Director of SHIELD herself for a while.

But the bigger deal is that she's part of a group of super-powered folks called Inhumans which are sort of like the X-Men's "mutants" (which Marvel can't use because Fox has the rights) but with more extraterrestrial flavor to their origin. The introduction of Daisy Johnson and the way they handled her origin on the show basically confirms that the Inhumans are in. I wouldn't say it was the whole point of the show up to now (I think the whole Winter Soldier crossover/Hydra-destroys-SHIELD plotline stands on its own), but the implication of the Inhumans being around at least doubles the number of super-powered people running around in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and quite possibly adds many, many more super-folks, if Marvel decides to use them as a substitute for mutants) and marks a pretty major reveal.

It's not so much that Daisy specifically is important, but she's the first character we've seen go from regular human to super powered. Like there's a specific process that can make this happen fir certain people.

That could radically change the dynamics of the world.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 3:13 AM on December 13, 2014 [1 favorite]

Well, it seems that some slice of the world already knows about that process / is super-powered -- the last scene before the credits, with the phone call. It's not so much that the process is new, but that now SHIELD and HYDRA know about the process. Definitely a big change for our heroes, either way.

Hey, that was pretty good! Nice pacing, good payoff on the stories, some nice moments. So glad Skye just shot Ward. So many moments in this show has the good guy pointing the gun at the bad guy and not shooting. Here in this episode they shoot at least twice, Skye shooting Ward and Coulson shooting Whitehall. Good on ya! Lame about Ward surviving, but I agree with the call he's too good a villain to spend.

Has Raina ever been given a back story? I want to know about her Chinese birth and her crazy dad and how she came to be who she is now. She's far more interesting an actor than the woman playing Skye, that's for sure. Although now that she's all transformed it may get silly, or possibly even recast.

Oh totally, but it seems like the existence of local super powered beings is going to be a thing, along with the knowledge of how to create them. Especially in light of the end of Winter Soldier, where a bad talks about this being the age of miracles, while the Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch use their powers in the background.

Has Raina ever been given a back story? I want to know about her Chinese birth and her crazy dad and how she came to be who she is now.

Yeah, you must be talking about Skye.

Spoilers links below about backstories. I linked to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Wikis, which gives info that's been shown and stuff the creators have returned, which hasn't been explicitly stated in the show, so beware!

Yes, Skye's been given a bit of a backstory, Raina too. Must of it has been covered in the last two episodes.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 7:01 AM on December 14, 2014

No I'm asking about Raina! I was failing to be funny referencing parallels to Skye. Thanks for the Wiki link, Brandon. Raina was found as a street kid in Thailand. Cal, Skye's father, was sort of Raina's figure. This stuff was all explained on screen but I missed it.

I like the subtle story of the parallels between Skye and Raina. Only where Skye is this annoying LA girl raised in a life of relative privilege, Raina is the tough streetwise lady who's made a place in the world for herself with her talents. I particularly like how she is such a free agent, working with whomever advanced her goals at that time. (OK, that's a bit of an obnoxious revisionist view.)
