StartUp Podcast: #10 Mixing Art And Business
December 22, 2014 9:50 PM - Subscribe

Lessons on outgrowing your business plan.

Alex discusses personal finances with his wife, then reviews the original projections with Matt. He weighs the pros and cons of different rates of growth, especially considering the recent spotlight that Serial has shown on the podcasting world. He also chats with another artist/entrepreneur who has possibly the best pizza restaurant website ever.

For the record, I checked Alex's Twitter feed, and he did in fact find some people who had never heard of Serial. I do suppose that it's good that not everyone lives in the Twitter/Podcast echochamber that I currently inhabit.

Also I thoroughly enjoyed the mouseovers on the pizza website. Party Squirrel!

I had been curious how Serial's runaway success is going to affect his decision making, though I am not entirely sure that he responded to it in a less cliched manner than "both growing and postponing growth have risks", which seems like the entrepreneurial version of "In conclusion, podcasts are a land of contrasts".

Serial has been the elephant in the room! I was wondering how he felt about it - it must be bittersweet to launch a podcast market intending to create the breakout mainstream podcast hit, and then have friends and colleagues create The Breakout before you have time to get off the ground.

I am so happy that they are having success with the audience numbers. I literally cheered out loud when I heard the number. COL! I have listened to Planet a money since the very beginning and once spoke to Alex on the phone, which was an exceeding odd experience (which I'm sure radio people hear all the time) so I am def emotionally invested.

I also got so excited for them when he announced the audience numbers. Yeayyy!

bq, when/why did you talk to Alex on the phone?

Was it really his stated intention to create The Breakout Hit, though? My impression is just that his focus is to be profitable (which is a nonstarter in the nonprofit/public radio world) and self-sustaining, and what I found more impressive is that Serial took an entire year of preparation to launch* whereas Gimlet basically hit the ground running, what, this summer? and has already started churning out two pretty good podcast series.

*I have not listened to Serial so I have no idea how intricate it is, just that if it plays from the TAL house style it's probably not my bag.
