Virus:32 (2022)
April 22, 2022 10:56 AM - Subscribe

A rapid spreading virus which transforms people into intelligent, ultra-violent, extra-fast zombified hunters. After each wave of attack by the monsters, they're left incapacitated for 32 seconds while they recover their strength. A new Argentinian film from director Gustavo Hernandez (La Casa Muda).

Currently streaming in the US on Shudder.

Apologies, this is from Uruguay, not Argentina, though I think it is partly Argentinian-madr, hence the confusion.

This is tense and good, a thriller with very human characters. Iris in particular is a uniquely flawed (but still ultimately sympathetic!) character. I mean
... at the beginning she's kind of the worst... in a recognizably human way, but to a degree single moms aren't typically rendered.

Also, this feels like it would be a gore fest, but it's mostly suspense and threatened gore. It's closer to the violence level of A Quiet Place than 28 Days Later.

And the premise! The :32 pause thing? It's very clever but presented naturally and not at all gimmicky. Terrific score.

This is top shelf. Highly recommended. It does an A+ job of being a B movie. That is high praise in my world.

This movie has:
-Chekhov's skateboard
-Chekhov's flares
-Chekhov's scissors
-Chekhov's zombie baby-eating mom
-Chekhov's knock

and just in general, Chekhov's pausing zombie.
