I always think one of the hallmarks of a great actor is how well they do absolute silence. So many moments in this one where Sarah Lancashire just sat. And sat. And sat. And was so powerful to watch.

From the moment in the office where her colleague told her about the prison visits onwards, so much brilliant, silent, thinking.

Royce too, of course - they are very worthy adversaries!

I had to pause while watching so I could Google “tiny phone Happy Valley.” I found an article about how searches for “tiny phone” shot up in the UK while the episode aired.

The cafe phone call scene was so good!

Here is the article about the "tiny phone" search. And of course here is an article relating how about 20,000 such phones - which appear to be especially marketed at prison use on Ebay - are confiscated per year. The pull quote you are looking for from a convict: ‘One geezer I was padded up with had brought in four of the small mobiles up his arse, he sold them within minutes of getting on the wing.’ Ouch!

Yeah, I was all ready for her to kick off, from the moment in the police station when she heard about the betrayal. That she didn't, and kept it all simmering through the whole episode was much more effective and interesting writing and acting.

I am also very, very glad I'm not that poor pharmacist.

I've ventured onto FanFare for the first time ever so I can rhapsodise about this series, which I only discovered last week. Now up to the end of S3ep2, hoping to catch up fully on iPlayer in time for Sunday's broadcast.

The relationship between Catherine and Clare is so solid, despite everything, that this revelation is all the more devastating. I hope they can come through it. Also rooting for the pharmacist, and anti-rooting for the PE teacher.

Welcome, altolinguistic, glad you're enjoying it!

A friend of mine was just watching an old episode of Clocking Off and said it had Sarah Lancashire and Siobhan Finneran (aka Catherine and Clare) sparking off each other, but 20 years younger. Just looking, it all seems to be available on UKTVplay, so maybe I'll wean myself onto that after Happy Valley's finished, to cope with the withdrawal pangs!

Love to see Siobhan Finneran's range, in this vs. Downton Abbey.
