Several episodes this season have felt like RPG quests, but especially this one: to retake Mandolore you have to recruit a tribe, but accessing that zone requires completing a mission for the fully automated luxury gay space communists (Lizzo! Jack Black! Christopher Lloyd!) which in turn necessitates an investigation.

Nice use of Bo Katan's and Din Djarin's respective strengths in negotiating with droids and Ugnots, and use of the codechain. As someone mentioned in an earlier thread, it does appear that Mandolorian membership is identified much as Jewish identity is today (i.e. by creed, adoption, or ancestry) with none taking particular precedence.

Din Djarin's abuse of the battledroids reminded me strongly of Boston Dynamic's early testing their own robotic creations. But hyperloop - really?

But hyperloop - really?

Yes, but it’s actual public transport and not just an overhyped car tunnel.

It was an amusing episode. I can't help but feel the whole season is just marking time until Ahsoka, though. It's been pretty forgettable overall.

I enjoyed the episode, but in a season which has been dragging its feet to a certain extent, it felt like coming to a deadstop with a significant event being tacked on at the end. Din and Bo go on an adventure could've been something that happened sooner and it seems like Bo, having had to wear her helmet non-stop for a few days or years, who knows with this show, was ready to leave her helmet off in perpetuity.

This was also one of the most George Lucas episodes ever. Slapping together whimsy, a procedural crime drama with twists of noir, political commentary, and then a formal mandalorian duel, all at once? Totally George.

The funny thing is that we can now go back to our theories about Bo and the Darksaber on Mandalore and mark that one off as a confirmation.

I enjoyed this episode (mostly because of the fun cast). I would probably have found the Darksaber custody twist to be an unsatisfying cop-out if it had been telegraphed when it happened, but it genuinely hadn't occurred to me until it was pointed out, so I thought it was quite a clever callback. And it retroactively makes that episode seem less clunky.

I can't remember where I read the observation that Grogu is mostly just there now (because he was meant to go off to be a Jedi at the end of the first plot arc, but they couldn't possibly get rid of him because of the fan response). So he looks adorable and occasionally does something cute, but you could completely write him out of the episode and it would make absolutely no narrative difference. Now I can't unsee it -- but he is adorable, so I can't complain.

The leave Grogu with a babysitter while Mando goes and does stuff has been a consistent theme for the show. Okay, babysitter and/or evil Imperials bent on cloning/using Grogu for nefarious purposes. Really, the show is built around him being a cute kid who mostly sits around being cute.

This was a satisfying episode and Bryce Dallas Howard needs a SW movie. I can tell during an episode whether or not she directed it. And she is just so fond of Grogu and it really comes through during her episodes. BDH has also directed both episodes with other-species love - the frog people and the....erm. Quarren and calamaris? I don't know what they were but their love is forever apparently. This is yet another episode where Din Djarin has been sidelined in favor of someone else but he works really well as a side character, tbh. I do hope he is in the last 2 shows more.

Also it is so obvious to me when Lateef Crowder is in the beskar, he was the one chasing and running around in the bad droid scenes. He is shorter / stockier than Brendan Wayne and has a very explosive style of moving. It kind of takes me out of the scene when BW is standing next to KS and he's 6 inches taller and then she's running next to LC and they're both the same height.

Glad to see Bo Katan getting the band back together. Still assuming (I know I know) that Moff Gideon will appear in the last 2 episodes, like he did during S1.

I loved all of Lizzo's scenes and Grogu's interactions with her. Din's sigh when he said Grogu doesn't like strangers and then she dangles food in front of him and he is hew new best friend...;) And she knights him because he helped her win the croquet game. So now both Tarre Vizsla and Grogu are the still the only characters who are jedi, mandalorian, AND now knights.

Mass Effect meets Cyberpunk 2077 - Starpunk 2077, maybe? In any case, this ended up being one of the funniest and most irreverent eps so far, not just because of Jack Black, but also the casual murdering of the whole prequel politics stuff.

Despite the RPG quest of it all, it felt quite a bit lighter and more fun than a lot of this show. Also, enough CG for an entire trilogy of movies!

I'm so amused at Jack Black and Lizzo as democratically elected royalty in love. I love Lizzo's headdress in particular. Okay, her entire dress is amazing.

"He doesn't take kindly to strangers."
*waves food*
*baby instantly somersaults into her arms adorably*

"You had me at battle droids."

"They're also programmed not to harm organics. How's that going?"

The last name of Hellgate isn't suspicious AT ALL....

"You will always be welcome in our domed paradise. And to this little one, I grant knighthood." AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW.

Seriously, I'm loving Duchess Lizzo SO MUCH.

I really enjoyed this, actually? I loved Fancy World, I loved Lizzo and Jack Black, I loved the baby's happiness at being with her, it was so cute. I enjoyed how Din knew how to deal with the various people/droids that hadn't come up for Bo-Katan before, I liked how there's finally a loophole for her to get the dang darksaber back. Woot woot! Sure, it was sidequesty and give-a-mouse-a-cookie, but I had a good time.

Yes, baby doesn't have a lot of plot in this Mandalorian-themed plot this season. True dat, but who knows, he might have more later.

No credit at the end, but I think Linda Hunt was the voice of the lead Uggnot.

This was a satisfying episode and Bryce Dallas Howard needs a SW movie. I can tell during an episode whether or not she directed it.

I could also tell that this was a Bryce Dallas Howard episode. She is unquestionably the best Star Wars director and should get to do a big project.

Lizzo and Jack Black were just the right level of fatuous without being ridiculous. I was glad they weren't too prominent in the episode, but they added a lot of flourish. Chris Lloyd has lost a lot of range in his old age, but he was fine. They didn't make him out to be a serious villain, just an old man clinging to an old way. After the last few episodes having so much to do with the rise of the New Order, it was good to have a simpler setup.

But, overall I am disappointed in the rather cavalier way everything that seemed to be lining up at the end of Season 2 has been handled. Din's redemption quest was over and done in two episodes. The thorny question of the Darksaber is dealt with through some rationalization in dialog. Moff Gideon escapes offscreen and will undoubtedly feature in the season finale with no appearance beforehand.

I’ve got my doubts about where the show is going and whether they can deliver on the threads they’re setting up, but like Grogu with snacks, I can forgive a lot if you wave cool guest stars in front of me. Also, yeah, BDH is #1, she’s got a handle on this show like no one else.

I swear I saw "indulgent" in this thread. Episode was indulgent. But kind of neat scifi extreme what-if (kind more grounded Butlerian jihad).

Now I'm kind of interested in calamari and, er, the other species' natural history. Two separate lineages evolved sentience at around the same time?

Lizzo treating Grogu like a lapdog didn't feel right.

Someone on Tik Tok pointed out that the show is taking pains to show that Din is bad at using a jetpack, and now I can't unsee it. Bo Katan does powered jumps and uses it in combat with grace, Din is physically vaulting over stuff and has very sloppy landings. It makes sense, since Bo Katan has probably been using hers since childhood and Din maybe has 2 years of experience with his if you count the unexplained off screen time jump.

I need to stop watching this show. It's prequel-levels bad now. It's Book of Boba Fett bad.

That scene with Lizzo and Jack Black reminded me of the Star Wars Christmas Special.

Oh my god, as a well documented droid stan, this might be my favorite episode of not only this show, but all Star Wars television??? I'm still incoherent with glee about how much I enjoyed this. I was literally screaming, crying, slapping my knee with laughter. My partner was like "this was like, a first season Clone Wars filler episode" and I was like "YES, AND???" I liked those! Star Wars is silly!

I asked out loud if I was hallucinating. What the fuck did I just see, I'm going to watch this episode every night next time he's out of town.

This was enjoyable fluff, but it was very pretty enjoyable fluff that made Mrs Clanger and I laugh several times. The sudden silence when Bo Katan and Din Djarin entered the droid bar is such an English rural village pub stereotype that we both came out with "You're not from round 'ere...?" in the mandatory broad West Country accent. And I couldn't hide my mirth at the droid mortuary drawer! I mean, why?

(On first watching I though I saw a Disney easter-egg in the form of Maximilian from The Black Hole in the bar, but on re-watching and pausing it was just a generic large maroon droid.)

I note that Captain Bombardier pronounces his name like the bizjet manufacturer not the British Royal Artillery rank. And did I hear correctly that Commissioner Helgait was exiled to the weedkiller moon of Paraquat?

I loved this. Fun, silly, a droid bar, a Mandalorian fight scene, Grogu getting knighted--it had everything. I was cheering at Din's speech about how the Darksaber belonged to Bo-Katan. I made the same argument, vehemently, to my husband at the end of the Mandalore episode. The camera focused on when Din lost the saber and again when Bo-Katan picked it up, and then again, when Din put the sabre back on. She clearly won it--he was defeated, lost it, and she defeated his captor. And she did that with the Darksaber. I was pumping my fist after Axe admitted it belonged to her.

I missed some of the talk at the table when we meet Jack Black and Lizzo because I was so busy looking at Lizzo and admiring how fantastic she was. So cool to have them and Christopher Lloyd in the show.

I fully believe Jack Black came up with that name, or at minimum, the pronunciation of it.

His character immediately struck me as a riff on the old EU's Warlord Zsinj, though I have my doubts about that having been the intent.

Yes, in canon the Mon Calamari (big eyes) and Quarren (squid face) evolved on the same ocean planet of Mon Cala. They'd been in conflict/civil war often through history, with the Mon Cal ruling over the Quarren.

I have mixed feelings about this season. On the one hand, the overall storyline about the reunification of the Mandalorians and the reclamation of Mandalore is one that I'm really interested in. I really like we're getting more Bo-Katan, and there are some great actions scenes.
But on the other hand, there's a real lack of an overall coherent plot. The serialised, Side-Quest Of The Week, format feels odd after the well put together first two seasons. Grogu has gone from being the focus of the plot to a kind of inconsequential side-kick - making all the effort they went through to find Luke Skywalker seem like a waste of time.

All in all the episodes are fun individually but I don't have the same excitement to see "what happens next" that I did before. I'm mostly just day-dreaming about Andor season 2.

But, overall I am disappointed in the rather cavalier way everything that seemed to be lining up at the end of Season 2 has been handled. Din's redemption quest was over and done in two episodes. The thorny question of the Darksaber is dealt with through some rationalization in dialog. Very much agree with this (although I feel smug that I called the "technically Bo-Katan won the darksabre in combat..." twist beforehand).

Very much agree with this (although I feel smug that I called the "technically Bo-Katan won the darksabre in combat..." twist beforehand).

You convinced me then, so now I also feel smug for agreeing with this opinion. Thank you for the gift!

there's been a lot of comparisons to video games and side quests, but really, this is what the show has always been about. It takes a side story and turns it to the focus of the episode, perhaps injecting some character development, perhaps not, and then maybe throw in a dash of overarching season story.

The first season's arc was essentially getting Grogu, keeping Grogu, and getting Grogu back, and in all of that, most of the episodes were Go here, do this, keep going forward. Remember we had a whole episode of Din protects the village from bandits, another one of Din has to get a furry rhino egg to get Jawas to give back his ship, and so on. Season Two was similar, Din has to go find a bounty on Tatooine, Din has to help Ahsoka defeat a small warlord, Din has to help Bo-Katan capture an Imperial cruiser, and so on. What these episodes generally do is gather up pieces that culminate in the finale (I feel this is very typical of Filoni's more serial style - dropping this here and that there, and then it comes back around).

It may be the tightness or quality has dipped and makes one focus more on this aspect, and also, I think the previous seasons had storylines were more assertive in terms of the greater storyline. There were also more episodes that felt like mini-arcs, two parters, or even three parters (Season 1's first three, for example), which added a more cohesive feeling to it.

Yet in the end, this show is an homage, in part, to Lone Wolf and Cub, and having read that entire run (thanks to this show), it so very much the hero and cub go here, do this, keep moving on (very often times Daigoro/cub just kinda chills on the side or even with a babysitter) and then the greater story of the Lone Wolf plays out periodically here and there. I think the nature of the episodes we've had this season and previous fall into this category.

This was very silly, but very fun, and that's fine with me. Glad to have the writers confirm that Bo Katan already won the darksaber in combat. The droids not wanting to be replaced by humans was so very topical. There really could be a whole show about droids. If they can do a show with a main character in a helmet all the time, why not?

I am unsure about the connection between democracy and everyone living an idle life of luxury. Is this the one planet where people vote in their own self-interest? If living off droid labor was possible, is there a reason an autocracy wouldn't do it, too?

nth-ing "Bryce Dallas Howard directed the hell out of that episode, give her a film". And her comedic timing is impeccable. The way that
Axe: But according to our ways, the ruler of Mandalore must possess the Darksaber.

Din: Then she shall have it. This belongs to you.

Bo: It's not a gift to be given, no matter how well intended.

Din: It's not a gift. While exploring Mandalore, I was captured. And this blade was taken from me. Bo-Katan rescued me and slayed my captor. She defeated the enemy that defeated me. Would this blade then not belong to her?
10 seconds of “That's it, work it out Thinkenstein…”
Din: Would it not belong to her?

Axe: It would.

Din: I return this blade to its rightful owner.

Excalibur would seem to be one classic reference for that (not won in combat, but wielded by he who could pull from the stone).

I guess I'm the only one with crossoverman on this one. It had its entertaining moments -- I laughed at the revelation of Jack Black, and again on Doc Brown's appearance -- but so much of it was just corny filler. At the risk of being called a hater, I thought Lizzo's performance was pretty bad acting (and it isn't like Star Wars has set a high bar in the past for acting quality). The logic of droids in Star Wars becomes ever more nonsensical. Bo Katan says all their behavior is programmed, so are they programmed to go to the bar? But also they can't be trusted and have individual personalities, maybe, and they can feel pain, and ... whatever. I mean, I know, I know, I should just "Forget it Jake, it's Star Wars..."

I also noticed that the RPG plotting was very strong with this one. I could almost see the dialogue options as I was watching. I think I said "Oh good thing Mando unlocked 'Uggnot Friendship +1 Charisma' back in season 1" when they went down to the lower levels. "Hit X to jostle droid. Hold X to kick droid."

This was easily my favorite episode this season. I agree it was sillier than other episodes and more George Lucas-y, but in a good way. At least we didn't go to Coruscant.) This was not Jar-Jar or Anakin/Padme romance bad. The seeming mismatch of Jack Black and Lizzo actually made it MORE believable for me, despite some acting and accent slip-ups for both of them.

I agree with and noticed so many things that others have noted here: that I have really liked every BDH episode; that the way the droids behaved when kicked was very much like Boston Dynamics; that this is very much like an RPG serial with a slow-moving secondary plot, but that it's always been that, and that's okay; that the Darksaber ownership turned out like I thought it should based on what had happened; that I was expecting the droids to say, "we don't serve your kind here" and was kind of happy they didn't.

Speaking of which, I agree that the ethics around droid treatment in Star Wars is very inconsistent. Droids are smart enough to say, "Hey, what are you doing!?" and "I wouldn't do that if I were you," but dumb enough that it's okay to put a bullet through their head without a second thought. This episode also grappled with that a bit and "humanized" droids (as if humans should be the standard for compassion in the universe), which, as others pointed out, is very topical given what's happening with AI right now. Also, re: Star Wars inconsistencies, this universe has FTL travel, but the droids need to speak out loud into a radio to communicate. For me, these contradictions are okay; they just add color to the universe. Cad Bane's cowboy hat doesn't make any sense either.

I think Lizzo knighted Grogu solely so that whenever Episode 10 comes around, the audience can go nuts when somebody refers to a character off-screen as "A Knight of Plaizir" or some such, and then pan over to an adult-ish Grogu wielding the Darksaber or something.

Also, I LOLed when they sent Helgait to Paraqaat. All I could think of was "You... human paraquat!" from the Big Lebowski.

No, this was something that almost took me out of the episode. Given the history of acting in this franchise, I'll give her a pass, though. She shared a wonderful anecdote about her father sitting her down and introducing and sharing Star Wars with her as a child, so this was a dream come true. I'll take a minor bit of inexperienced acting for someone to have that experience.

The trailer! I'm out of time today, but was so close to creating a front page post about Celebration just to share it (and well, the other news).

Chopper scored big points when he took out the interdictor destroyer. Arguably, Ezra may have surpassed him, depending on what happened to Thrawn's fleet after the purgill attack.

[repeating a post I wrote on Reddit]

In the droid bar on Plazir-15, they passed by a droid in the background I think I recognized. Here are three screenshots showing the droid in question. In particular, the third image gives a clear shot of the shape of the droid's head—notice the round protrusion on its left side—and the distinctive pattern on its chest.

That looks like a BLX labor droid, and in particular, it looks a lot like this illustration of Bollux, a droid who traveled with Han Solo and Chewie for a while in Brian Daley's Han Solo Adventures. I think it's especially telling that, while the droid was on the screen, the bartender was explaining how afraid the droids were of being replaced and dismantled. At one point in Han Solo at Stars End, Bollux has the following conversation with Han:
"The great starship yards of Fondor was where I was activated," Bollux responded, in his slow way. "Then, for a time, I worked for a planetary survey Alpha-Team, and after that, for a construction gang on weather-control systems. I had a job as general roust-about for Gan Jan Rues Traveling Menagerie, and as maintenance helper in the Trigdale Foundaries. And more. But one by one, the jobs have been taken over by newer models. I volunteered for all the modifications and reprogramming I could, but eventually I simply couldn't compete with the newer, more capable droids."

Interested now despite himself, Han asked, "How'd Jessa pick you for this ride?"

"She didn't, sir; I requested it. There was word that a droid would be selected from the general labor pool for some unstated modification. I was there, having been purchased at open auction. I went to her and asked if I might be of use."

Han chortled. "And for that they yanked out part of you, rearranged the rest, and stuck that coin bank inside you. You call that a deal?"

"It has its disadvantages, sir. But it's kept me functioning at a relatively high level of activity. There would probably have been some lesser vacancy for me elsewhere, Captain, even if it were only shoveling biological byproducts on a nontechnological world, but at least I have avoided obsolescence for the time being."

Han gaped at the droid, wondering if he were circuit-crazy. "So what, Bollux? What's the point? You're not your own master. You don't even have a say in your own name; you have to reprogram to whatever your new owner docides to call you, and Bollux is a joke. Eventually you'll be of no further use, and then it's Scrap City."

Chewbacca was listening intently now. He was far older than any human, and his perspectives were different from a man's ... or a droid's. Bollux's leisurely speech made him sound serene as he replied, "Obsolescence for a droid, sirs, is much like death for a human, or a Wookiee. It is the end of function, which means the end of significance. So it is to be avoided at all costs, in my opinion, Captain. After all, what value is there to existence without purpose?"
So not only does that appear to be a BLX droid, it might actually be Bollux himself, still surviving, still finding ways to make himself useful. What do you think?

I totally buy that theory, The Tensor. Well spotted!

Din Djarin's abuse of the battledroids reminded me strongly of Boston Dynamic's early testing their own robotic creations

That was my immediate thought too.

Also: the chase that followed was really obviously all shot in the Volume, no? and suffered from it in the same way that the green-screen chases in the sequels did: poor sense of place and continuity because it had to cut to a new shot every 20 paces when they ran out of floor for the actors to run on.

The writing this season is just terrible. OTOH this episode hit better, I think because they leaned fully into the goofy without compromise. I was enjoyably entertained.

My favorite scene was the droid bar. What a deliciously Star Wars thing! Bar scenes have a long history in westerns and of course the cantina will forever be iconic. So to translate that to something as alien as droid culture and then play it totally straight.. Also someone had a lot of fun designing all those different droids. I suspect they visited every lowrider paint shop in LA to get all those various finishes.

I loved the Jack Black / Lizzo pairing. They also played it straight but obviously having those two bent every scene, both because of who we know they are and because of their talents. I regretfully agree with Saxon Kane that Lizzo's acting felt awkward; she read to me as a performer who just hasn't had a lot of experience with highly produced TV. But she was fun and inhabited the character well, particularly the interactions with the Muppet Baby.

I'm so grateful they figured out how to get Boca's helmet off her. Having both stars running around with their faces hidden all the time would have been too much. And Katie Sackhoff is too good to hide under a beskar.

Shameful admission: I didn't know that was Lizzo, because as a middle-aged nerd I am only vaguely aware of who Lizzo is; I assumed she had to be somebody because obviously she's there with Jack Black (of whom I as a middle-aged nerd am quite aware) as part of a stunt-casting duo, and she seemed like someone who performs but doesn't act, if that makes sense. And whatever criticism I have of her performance here (and I think C. Lloyd was not at the top of his game either, and Starbuck seemed a stiffer than usual too, so it wasn't just her), she did fit the part, as my Distinguished Colleague Nelson says.

As thrown out as all the guest stars made me, I adore Lizzo so I can’t complain, and Jack Black (whom I also adore) looked like he’d died and gone to heaven—he’s not just in a Star Wars vehicle, he’s Lizzo’s husband and he clearly could not be happier. Seeing how sparkly he was every time he looked at her made me really happy.

I've been trying to not be mad that the Mandalorian isn't Andor. Different shows, different tones. Then this tweet made me laugh out loud.
Jon Favreau: So we scanned Alec Guinness' corpse so he can play old man Obi Wan again.

Dave Filoni: remember Jeb Bedshitter from my 3rd cartoon? LOOK, HERE HE IS IN LIVE ACTION!!

Tony Gilroy: It is always morally okay to throw pipe bombs at police

It all checks out.

Also, they showed the next episode at Star Wars Celebration, and reportedly, "it moved a lot of things along," so be careful of people dropping spoilers and what not.

Agree that this was not the best acting of the season, but sometimes you get a vibe like everyone on set was having so much fun, and this episode had it. I enjoy that a lot. And I have to imagine the costumers were delighted to work with someone with Lizzo's flair for dramatic fashion.

> Speaking of which, I agree that the ethics around droid treatment in Star Wars is very inconsistent.

Droids have long been a sorta weak spot in the worldbuilding. I forget which Star Wars series I kept saying "why was I programmed to feel pain?!"

When they were thinking over the Darksaber, I really wanted someone to say, like, "by the Rule of Transitivity".

*cough* Sir Baby Yoda.

The droid politics edged upon in Solo will be taking center stage in the upcoming comic book event, "Dark Droids," where a droid insurrection will occur. I think it's going to be messy, as it seems the "rebelling" droids all have purple eyes, etc., indicating there's a program/software involved which compels the resistance, versus a natural decision like in Solo for independence (as briefly as that went). For some body horror level droid resistance, check out Daniel Older's "Last Shot" where droids start killing living beings for their body parts. Heh.

The 'hyperloop' used as a connection between domes is a clear homage to the 1976 Logan's Run movie. I was wondering if The place was going to be run by kids.

The spherical robot that kicked with the lasers is another reference to the same film. All they needed was Farrah Fawcett.
