Bosch: Us and Them

That was all nicely wrapped up and tied with a bow.

I like how Maddie called him dad instead of Harry and nothing was made of it. The ending was satisfying enough for me that they could not do a second season and I'd not be disappointed and feel like things were left hanging. Also, an honourable mention for the great opening theme music Caught a Ghost - Can't Let Go (anyone know where those Anthony Perkins clips are from?).

anyone know where those Anthony Perkins clips are from?

Looks like most of them are from The Trial (1962). Directed by Orson Welles, based on a book by Kafka, and it's funny how much you can see both influences in those clips. I was wondering about the opening theme, thanks for tracking that down.

I haven't read Michael Connolly for several years, so I'm not sure that I've read all the Bosch books, but I was mildly obsessed with them in the 90s and early 00s. I had no idea they were adapting them for television until a friend alerted me ("Hey, don't you have a bunch of books by this guy?") and so I binged through the season over the last couple of days. I wasn't seeing Titus Welliver in the character at first; my mental Bosch is shorter, darker, and more of a cypher. I'm still not in love with the casting but Welliver has grown on me and I'm mostly okay with him now. (I'm also struggling a bit with Marlo Stanfield in the front seat of a cop car but I'll deal.)

I really want to like this show, but I'm not sure there's a lot here to distinguish Bosch from any other generic crime drama. The books, especially the early ones, felt darker. Book Bosch (at least, as I remember him) is flawed and haunted and obsessed. TV Bosch feels more like Jimmy McNulty Lite, a classic good-cop-with-authority-issues. Bosch-the-show is definitely watchable, but it isn't quite hitting the notes I was looking for. Still I kind of hope they do another season or two, there are some great stories in those books that I'd love to see them explore.
