RuPaul's Drag Race: Glamazonian Airways
March 10, 2015 11:34 AM - Season 7, Episode 2 - Subscribe

The queens take flight in their first team challenge, with special help from Moby, Jordin Sparks, and Olivia Newton-John.

Ginger Minj wins largely by picking a vivacious team and staying upbeat through some complicated choreography. Sasha sashays, after offering little more to the episode than a bouquet of sour side-eyes.

Ginger's got kind of a je ne sais quoi about her. She definitely pulled focus during the dance number -- I think she's one to watch. Plus she has makeup skills for DAYS, I want to take lessons with her! Sasha, alas, is nothing we've not seen done better before.

Can we talk about Violet? Something about her bugs. I get the high fashion thing, and she's extraordinary at it, but I'm not seeing as much performance capacity from her. Am I off base?

I loved Ginger the second she walked into the workroom. Her face is FLAWLESS -- did you notice how crazy-good her 15 minute make-up was for the mini-challenge, too? Katya's mouth-mess (I can not even call that lip-synching) was disastrous, but I still think she has a ton of potential - she's sweet, beautiful, funny - she strikes me as someone who will make it pretty far.

I keep mixing up Pearl, Violet, and Miss Fame, but Fame is starting to stick out. I think she has much more to offer than being pretty, so I'm trying not to dislike her as much as I do. Violet seems extremely young, and reflexively defensive. Ru and Michelle give meaningful critiques ("I'm not going to steer you wrong! Not for no god-damned TV show!") and the queens who can't take constructive criticism sashay pretty soon.

Also, Moby? What?

I'm in love with both Ginger and Jaidynn, and I have high hopes for the first big queen to be crowned this season.

KathrynT, I'm with you on Violet. She seems uninspiredly cruel, even for a drag queen. I have little patience for young queens with a great look who seem to dig in their high heels and refuse to take criticism or look to older queens to learn from them. She seems like she is the type who might be proud to be ignorant of gay history and older gay icons, and that really, really irritates me. Maybe she'll prove me wrong. Or maybe when she has to makeover an older gay veteran she will crash and burn.

In the words of my viewing companion, "Nothing good can come from a male topknot."

Does Moby have a huge tax bill he needs to pay? Because he was on King of the Nerds and now RuPaul's Drag Race, and he didn't seem too excited to be on either. I did appreciate that he took part in the leafblower challenge himself, so I'll give him points for being a good sport here (which he kind of wasn't on KotN).

I think this year is going to be the year of the plus-sized queens, especially Ginger Minge. She's just so much fun, is great to go to for a quote ("Aryan Airlines" had me laughing) and the other queens seem to like her a lot.

Miss Fame is yummy in and out of drag, but I do worry she's just a face. I hope she has some hidden talents that will come out later.

There are still too many queens to keep track of, as evidenced by how quickly they sped through the final runway. I can't wait for the Visage/Violet cage fight that's sure to come.

You know they don't have piles of money to throw at him.

It was funny for me seeing him standing next to Ru, because I have encountered Moby in the wild ad he is a tiny little elf person.

Ginger Minj is the total package--funny, charismatic, gorgeous, and talented. I'm not sure about her dress sense yet.

Violet is very smug and condescending. She really rubs me the wrong way.

Katya did fuck it up this week, but she at least was entertaining during her word-flubbing. And I suspect she was mostly thrown into the bottom two instead of, say, Miss Fame, to put the fear of Ru into her and to make sure there was a good LSFYL. Because damn, that slow split. I think she'll go far despite lipsyncing early (a la Raven).

(Also, I'm at work now so can't link but Katya's tumblr (Mom's Gold Teeth) is pretty hilarious.)
