And that's how a generation discovered ennui.

Jesse Moynahan:
Mid Season 5 we tried to make a 45 minute Adventure Time TV movie. We almost did it, but the thing was a mess and needed so much work to get in shape. All the individual parts were really cool, but they weren’t hanging together right, and the end seemed impossible to figure out. I’d boarded the first 10 minutes of it (Steve Wolfhard helped me clean up my drawings. Actually Steve cleaned up all of my drawings.)

So the thing sat there for months. I was really psyched on my section and started to feel certain this movie was never gonna see the light of day. So we started pushing that we should cannibalize the parts and make them into episodes. That’s basically what happened. I got my opening section and used about half of it of it to make this episode a standalone story.

The aspect of this episode being part of a movie did come across. While I think it's entirely possible to approach it without knowing much about AT, it was chalk full of callbacks and had a sense of being something that felt a little edited together (there was more, but it was cut out type of feeling).

And wow, Root Beer Guy.

That's one of those things that I love about the show, the simplicity and mercilessness that its time constraints place upon it. It's not afraid to just cut to the chase, and likewise, that compactness helps carve away all the excess fat.

When they revealed that the Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant was just sitting in the treasure room, I felt rather bad for it. I'm glad that Finn essentially told it to go find itself and do what it wants. I was really hoping that somehow PBG would get her t-shirt back with the defeat of the Sky Witch. Alas, no.

I just added the AV Club review to the sidebar. I enjoyed this episode, but I wasn't nearly as high on it as the reviewer; however, it's definitely worth your time to read his review, as it has some really insightful things to say about the episode's themes.

I'm not caught up on Adventure Time and I did not watch this film, but if the Ancient Psychic Tandem War Elephant isn't a a mothballed tank, it's missing a great opportunity for a post-apocalyptic fantasy callback.
