Leaked episodes etiquette

Episodes of GoT were leaked recently, now it is an episode of Orphan Black. It's time we discuss the etiquette around leaked content. Can/should we put up posts for leaked episodes or shall we wait until they air as scheduled?

The baseline on this is that we would stick to the airdate schedule, if it's not an official release.

To expand on that a bit, we don't want people to have to go through illicit channels just to be able to participate in the discussion.

If it were an official early release and everybody would have access, it might be a different story. But my understanding is these leaks are kind of underground and not official/accessible through aboveboard means?

Yeah, I think that we agreed in the GoT free for all thread to stick with the scheduled releases.

I regret having watched the leaked episodes as I now have to be hyper-vigilant against spoilerating it for anybody else.

Not sure why/how stuff get's leaked, it appears on various streaming sites (not Nexflix, Hulu or TV) before the scheduled date. So in that sense everybody would have access even though it is not via the official channel(s).

Yes, I think it would be wise to avoid discussing illegally obtained content, as to avoid indirectly supporting people in activities that can result in people getting in some sort of trouble ("HBO targets torrent users over GoT leaks"). That article also notes that the episodes were "screeners," materials sent to a select few (reviewers and journalists, folks like that).

Not posting an episode early is a completely different beast from a ban on discussing leaked episodes. I strenuously object to the latter.

No. HELL NO. Wait for the air date.

That's fine, but mostly that means you can't discuss them on FanFare and should find somewhere else to do it.

(FWIW also, I think that free-for-all GoT FanFare Talk post was really pushing it too. FanFare Talk is for talk about FanFare, like MeTa is for talk about MetaFilter; it's not for back-door "let's work around the spoiler rules and talk about this show anyway" posts. Especially as there was a figleaf "hey new season of GoT coming up" post at around the same time. I didn't say this in the Talk post because, y'know, spoilers.)

The spoiler policy on FF refers to not talking about spoilers for ep 10 in a thread about ep 9 and about keeping the above-the-fold section spoiler-free. There is NO policy that makes the GoT Free for All forbidden or even close to it. Obviously it was clearly marked enough that those who didn't like the information contained therein didn't have to enter.

Because you know, some of us like spoilers or advance information.

One solution would be for pb to make a new tag for "leaked" similar to "Books Only" etc.

But really on top of the ethical considerations it just seems kind of non-practical to me, if you want to have a nice, good conversation, to leave out (I'm guessing) more than half of the people who would otherwise contribute. So you put up a new thread for the leaked episode, talk about it, and then put up another thread when it airs? And then everyone who was in the first thread reposts their original posts and has basically the same conversation all over again, except with more people? It feels like a time travel paradox.

a figleaf "hey new season of GoT coming up" post

That should've read "MeFi post", FWIW; I was referring to Brandon's FPP about the GRRM interview.

Sorry Ik ben; yes, your free-for-all was clearly marked and thank you for doing so. But no, I still believe FanFare Talk should be strictly for meta FanFare stuff. (But on the third hand, I don't think there's been much mod guidance on FanFare Talk beyond the initial "we'll figure this out as we go"; so that's just my opinion talking.)

"So you put up a new thread for the leaked episode, talk about it, and then put up another thread when it airs?"

I assume it is technically impossible in FF to post two times for "season 3 episode 2" to avoid what you are describing.

Sometimes there are only a few days until the regular air date, sometimes eps get leaked with more advance. From a practical standpoint I see no difficulty why people could not join the discussion after they have watched it - this happens frequently already in fact, I see new people popping into weeks or even months old threads for shows all the time.

Less people have TV sets nowadays, content becomes available in batches for certain shows, so air dates matter less and less.

How long does everyone think it'll take for producers to start "leaking" episodes with "incorrect" scenes?

You can post the same episode multiple times with different criteria. "First Watch" or "Books Included" etc. If there were to be a separate category for "illegally leaked online" then theoretically we could use that.

(Not advocating for it. I think it's a terrible idea. Just explaining.)

They could just add a Batman-style coda.

"Is this the end of the line for Joffrey Baratheon? Will Yara Greyjoy make a daring escape? Is Arya doomed to be crocodile chow? Will Hoder ever find true love? FIND OUT THE THRILLING ANSWERS ON THE SHOW WHEN IT AIRS ON HBO, YOU WANKERS."

LOLZ, zarq. It would be really great if the fake eps had silly things happening, like Hodor breaking into song or Cersei pointing out a UFO or random pratfalls from extras. That would be cool.

I cast my vote not to post episodes early if their leaked. This happened in Legend of Korra and while I think maybe a very small percentage of those actively watching and commenting may have watched the leaked stuff, the world didn't end because we waited on the air dates.

I don't know why we'd ever consider discussing leaked episodes and here is why. Look at this timeline:

Leak of copyrighted material --> Fanfare post on said material --> someone innocently asks in thread "How can I see this episode? --> someone answers --> FF/MeFi draws unholy wrath of copyright police

This is just a godawful notion and it should take about three seconds of reflection on this to see that.

I'd say 'what's the first rule of Fight Club?' applies here.

No, really, what is the first rule?

Ahh, no, better not tell me. If you tell me then you'd probably have to k

That would make me want to find the leaked episodes even more. This reminds me of the days of wildfeed rips being a common occurrence, when I "previewed" an episode of the Simpsons, and there was actually a scene missing from the aired version. It was a shot of Moe putting a helmet on a mouse who was on a motorcycle, I can't recall more than that at the moment. Anyway, now you know there are examples of "illegal" videos containing something different than you could see on TV.
