I think the pacing for the past few episodes has been a little slow and I'm hoping it picks up in the next four before the break. I mean, seriously, this entire episode was about Lesli who I'm guessing every person in the audience knew was NOT A and so we just spent an hour watching the Liars figure out what we all knew already. Of course she was a "speed bump" or whatever.

I did think it was kind of neat that Mona could figure out from the list of medicines that no one would want Charles' organs which makes a lot of sense (also I like Spencer but I'm always a little satisfied when Mona outsmarts her). That also means that someone at the time wanted to put proof that he was dead in his file -- was this so Mrs. DiLaurentis could sneak him out or maybe he bribed someone (Eddie?) to put him down as dead so he could escape?

Also, what did his card to his father mean? Does it mean he's coming to kill him or kidnap him? Obviously it's threatening but I was wondering if anyone else had any thoughts on that.

I did love the bit where Mona just listed off medicines and knew about them; she just knows things and no questions it, because she's Mona.

I think the threat is vague, but Charles's (or whoever's) MO for people close to him has been kidnapping (recently) or tormenting. My money is on taking him to a lair, rather than just killing him. This episode was kind of slow, but I thought the reveal of the letter (and Mr. DiLaurentis digging!) was a nice closer. I'm excited to see that play out.

The Lesli thing could have gone faster, and I'm not super clear on the resolution. I guess she's just crazy? It seems like there should be more there.

Plot aside, let's talk about Em's overall shorts. Were they the worst outfit worn in the history of the show or in the history of time? Why were they made of (leather, pleather, vinyl? I wasn't clear) Why didn't they fit her? Did Shay Mitchell do something to someone in wardrobe to make this happen to her?

I can't talk about those shorts. I need to undergo controlled exposure therapy and right now I'm still processing internally and I'm not really ready to talk about them to anyone else.

Can you post a picture of the shorts for those of us that follow the show purely by reading these threads?

Here

It's hard to see when she's standing up straight, but they also fit her really badly when she bends over. I mean I guess "Leather Short Dungarees" were probably not made to be active wear, but still.

Ugh and they make her look super hippy and the proportions of the top relative to her frame make her look pudgy which she's not and the bib part flops around. I think they might have been made from a lightly-textured vinyl shower curtain and the nose-hair of the Vengeful Demon of Bad Taste.

Thank you for sharing. That is so much worse than I imagined.

Apparently they're really leather! Something DIED to make that happen.

I like the shorts! My favorite part of this Godawful show is Shay Mitchell's amazing legs. And my biggest complaint is that she wears pants way too often.
posted by riruro at 8:50 AM on July 15, 2015 [1 favorite]

Shay Mitchell's legs are amazing and that dress she wore with the slit for the creepy dollhouse prom was PERFECT and I am 100% behind that, but the shorts themselves were terrible.

My favorite part of this Godawful show is how I am so deeply in love with it even though I know it is Godawful. I do. I love it so much. I also like how much time I spend wondering who is really dead. That is fun as well.

Emily's Dollhouse prom outfit, for those playing along at home. To be fair, other than Hanna, Charles was KILLING IT for clothes for a creepy bunker prom.

I'm not sure I've ever used that WornOnTV site for a show other than PLL, but I use it probably once a week for PLL.
posted by Bulgaroktonos at 9:01 AM on July 15, 2015 [1 favorite]

Ohhhh why is that site only for women, I've been dying to find that tight camo polo with little stripes on the sleeves that Mike wore in his super jacked mystery phase. Grrrr...

Anyway, I totally zoned out watching last night and I'm not sure what happened. Lesli is fine or something? Charles is alive? Sara is obviously bad news?
posted by yellowbinder at 9:31 AM on July 15, 2015 [1 favorite]

Yeah, I think that was the upshot. I sort of zoned out too -- it felt like a placeholder episode where the premise presented in the first five minutes was "Lesli is A" and then they spent the episode refuting that to no real end. Good to know Charles is alive, exciting that Lesli heard of him that time in Radley, but basically just killing time until next week.

Also yeah, Sara is definitely bad news and I don't think she and Emily should hook up since I think Emily is goodhearted and naive enough to let Sara drag her down. I don't think it would be intentionally, I think Sara just needs more support than Emily can provide and Emily doesn't want to admit that and it's going to be bad for both of them.

I'm glad Hanna seems to be getting over her snit somewhat; I didn't like the way she was freezing out Caleb even though I understand.

On another note, SO EXCITED to have more PLL fans in this thread! I remain convinced that there are a massive number of underground MeFi PLL watchers and I am always so glad when we get more people commenting.

Emily's shorts, yes, but what about Ezra's shirt?
posted by Clustercuss at 7:55 PM on July 15, 2015 [2 favorites]

Do you have a picture of Ezra's shirt? I don't remember it but I clawed my own eyes out when I saw Emily's shorts so I probably don't remember since I would have been bleeding too heavily to see. In a truly terrible situation (poorly-fitting leather overall shorts), sometimes something crazy is the sanest thing you can do.

I watch this show with my 15-year-old niece, and I've been sending her links to these discussions.

It's funny how hard it was for her to understand what Metafilter even is at first...she thought it was a kind of chat room. She's a really smart kid and very Internet-savvy, but her Internet is all apps, social media, and YouTube.

Anyway, she was concerned for you guys and wanted me to pass this along:
Can you please let them know that if they've never watched PLL before and are expecting the Charles mystery to be wrapped up in a way that is satisfying or even makes sense, they're going to be very disappointed. I love this show but that's not what it's for. Like they'll probably show Charles in the end wearing a mask and even though it's clearly a guy when he takes off the mask it'll be a girl or one of their moms or a dog or something, and then the camera will cut back to his body and there's no trace of the dude who was there two seconds ago, just the actress wearing smaller versions of the same clothes.

That's so considerate of your niece! Please let her know that I think most of us know what we've gotten ourselves into. As long as it doesn't involve any more supernatural nonsense like the whole Ravenswood debacle I think I'll be okay.

Wasn't it polo shirt covered in tiny dinosaurs or something? I remember noticing him wearing something that was a little strange.
posted by Bulgaroktonos at 9:00 AM on July 16, 2015 [1 favorite]

Oh maybe it was just polka dots.

Did someone wear a shirt with dinosaurs on it this week on PLL? Or maybe somewhere else? I definitely remember this, but it seems not be Ezra.

Your bedsheets have dinosaurs on them. Perhaps you are conflating "PLL characters" with "my bed on which I take frequent naps"? You seem very confused.

In A Clockwork Orange, didn't Little Alex's elderly mum have black leather lederhosen not unlike Emily's?

Because let's all be real with each other here: Those. Were. Lederhosen.

Maybe they were a kind of emotional foreshadowing: a device designed to make us throw up on our mouths a little, so that when Em got together with ol' Shower of Power at the end, we wouldn't be unprepared if we ended up throwing up a lot.

Also: Bulgaroktonos, do your dino sheets cone on king size, and if so, where did you get them? I must know immediately.

Also: I just saw a shockingly good dinosaur shirt on a little kid in _Me and You and Everyone We Know_. I'm sure that's not what you were thinking of, but still: it deserves recognition.

The sheets we bought doesn't seem to be sold anymore, so it's a good thing we bought two the last time we needed new sheets. I think they were only available up to queen, which is terrible.

We got them from Target and it doesn't look like they come in king sized unfortunately. Also if you search "Target Dinosaur Sheets" they look different from our sheets on which the dinosaurs are smaller and, frankly, more tasteful, but still lovely and full of roaring.

Also yes, those are the Miserable Lederhosen of Doom.

I would like to point out, incidentally, that you can tell this week's episode wasn't great because this is our chance to talk about Pretty Little Liars which normally is the only thing I want to do (seriously -- I spent a meetup last weekend trying to explain it to people) and yet this one was SO DULL that we are on a different topic altogether.

I did like when Hanna stole the car.
posted by Mrs. Pterodactyl at 5:48 AM on July 17, 2015

Ugh, God, those new Target dinosaur sheets. Have some dignity, guys! You are dinosaurs! Show some self-respect!

Pottery Barn has some marvellous dinosaur sheets, but they also top out at queen size. Goddammit.

Oh, and the episode? Yeah, it was an episode. I liked that it had a raccoon in it. I also liked the Mona-ex-machina at the end. The Charles stuff, I found personally useful because it plays into the omnibus theory I'm (trying to resist) working on. But on the whole it just felt like so much filler, and it was really a let-down after the two-week gap.

Alas, the Land of Nod dino sheets only go up to queen as well.

PS, for your future bedding needs, I once upon a time got many great answers to this question.

I can't even with "fashion" of this show. It's not quite to the level of Charmed, but still. Or is it? Now I'm not sure.

As an enormously avid Charmed fan (obviously), this question is fascinating to me. I think both shows are profoundly products of their time fashion-wise; PLL doesn't seem like it's on the level of Charmed fashion because no one wears backless leather halters anymore so they seem extra-ridiculous, but at the time it was sort of cutting-edge but not completely out of the mainstream. I think at the time Charmed filled the same fashion spot PLL is filling now and when we look back in fifteen years we might feel the same way about it.

Totally agree with all of this. The raccoon was delightful and I like whenever the characters have plausible PTSD issues like Hanna's freaking out at anything being in a cage and totally not thinking through what will happen when she lets stuff out. Always thrilled by Mona and please please share your Charles theory if you are up for it.

I did like that they realized they'd been chipped. It also explains why they were in those hospital beds in the dollhouse about which I was wondering. Them being chipped might have been the best part of the episode; PLL classic.
