Season 1 is filled with great episodes, but this is probably one of my favorites. That said, Finn not really having an imagination seems like something that showed up just for this episode (or maybe I just feel like Finn would be into using his imagination).

Well, and he is. He just doesn't realize it. Like the recent flowering of cool-to-be-nerdy as a cultural phenomenon; lots of people have actually enjoyed things that are clearly nerdy for a long time, but the stigma of "nerdiness" prevented them from seeing it in themselves or embracing it if they did. "Ha ha D&D nerds oh new stats for my fantasy football league are out" etc.

Finn actively resists introspection in the early days of the show (hence The Vault). Poor kid has a lot to deal with in his past, and seems a lot happier just throwing himself into action. This changes as he grows up (and the show grows up).
