Deutschland 83: Able Archer
August 6, 2015 7:50 AM - Season 1, Episode 8 - Subscribe

Season finale: Martin races to avoid police capture and warn the East Germans that "Able Archer" is only an exercise, not a real attack.

From Sundance.tv:
At the East German Headquarters, fear of a pre-emptive nuclear strike against the West has become a very real possibility, while in the West, the nuclear war game “Able Archer” reaches its peak. A fallen agent, Martin is now persona non grata on both sides of the border. On his way back into the lion’s den to confront the top security at East German’s Foreign Arm of the Secret Service, he saves Yvonne from the clutches of Annett and the Secret Police in Germany. Ingrid hunts down Schweppenstette to save Thomas from prison. Alex confronts his own demons – about his sexuality, about AIDS and about his father. Finally, Martin has no choice but to sacrifice himself to stop the East German’s Secret Service from setting off a catastrophe of epic proportions.

Would really enjoy a second season, though I worry they sort of brought almost all the characters to a conclusion, so I'm not sure where they'd go with it.

Martin's back home with Mom. Looks like Mom was possibly burning her secret library. Guess it's unclear if Martin and Annett will stay together? She at least acknowledged to Ingrid her feelings for Thomas.

The truth of Martin's father, (that we guessed here last week) is out.

Lenora's fleeing to Mozambique.

Interesting moment with Alex being interrogated - he appeared to be covering for Martin, having nothing but good things to say about him, at least at first. Was this really when he realized Martin was the mole? Getting rescued by him in the brothel wasn't kind of a clue?

Schweppenstette. What a piece of work. Gets caught lying about intelligence from NATO - almost singlehandedly starting World War III. And what a line: "He's my...source!"

Seems it would be hard/impossible to send Martin back West again now that he's blown his cover. And there are only a few years of Cold War left, with probably nothing approaching Able Archer in dramatic tension. But I'm hopeful for another season anyway!

Ooh, here we go:
“Deutschland 83″ creators-exec producers Anna Winger and Joerg Winger hope to tell the Cold War saga over three seasons, with three-year time jumps each season leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany....Whether the Wingers will be able to produce “Deutschland 86″ and “Deutschland 89″ won’t be decided until later this year, after the series airs on Germany’s RTL.
Cool. I like that plan. Hope it happens.

I would approve of a second season. And if it's Deutschland 86, it really must have a mention to Agent Vladimir in Dresden.

Now, which of the Edel men died? Alexander, over his AIDS scare and learning his almost half-brother is a spy, or Wolfgang, after his wife left him, his son is about to quit following on his military career, her daughter might have defected (he just knows she was in East Berlin, not that she was STASI'd into a vacant room), his aide was a spy and he failed to pick that up, and that he was part of almost bringing nuclear Armageddon? Or one of them shot another? Or none of the above?

Wondering what was that with Tischbier welcoming Thomas into West Germany. Is it because Tischbier is a plausible friend of the GDR, or he's going to end up in the grill of a Mercedes like Linda?

My theory is that it was Wolfgang who committed suicide, not Alex, but that isn't based on anything more than gut feeling. The scene in the backyard seemed a bit too pat, but that's a minor complaint compared with an immensely enjoyable show. Please let it come back for a second and third season!
