Jessica Jones

Is there any organized group watching this? I looked around and didn't see one, just checking. I'm sure I'll love to talk about it online, but don't have much time to craft posts, Nanowrimo is gobbling most my energy and time.

I will be watching it!

I'm conflicted about how we should discuss it though.

While a single season post feels like it would be better for the amount and type of conversation we'd have, because it's a Netflix show that comes out all at once we can't depend on air times to create natural "spoiler barriers".

A post per episode? To get into the nitty gritty of each one.

I like that idea. I think we did it with Daredevil? I am excited to start watching it but I probably won't be able to binge watch it given I have a lot to do over the weekend.

I will be starting it tonight and like the idea of each episode getting a post. And you've reminded me that I best get writing my 1667 words for the day so I can watch more than one before bed.

... I may have watched 5 episodes starting at midnight. (That said, no spoilers, and let's talk about it one episode at a time.)

Yes! I don't have time for binging either right now but let's at least get a first episode discussion going.

I do like to binge watch, but I find that I'm tilting pretty strongly in the direction of disliking this release model because so many other things suffer in consequence. I think that Netflix is making a mistake with this model because it means a show's buzz is a flash-in-the-pan -- notice and media discussion about a how show needs time to percolate and diffuse through the culture and this model short-circuits much of that.

And I think we see some of these effects here. I watched the first six episodes this morning almost immediately after they became available. I'm uncertain about when people are going to post episodes here (I considered posting the first one this morning, but the show hadn't been added to FanFIlter yet) and it's hard to discuss each episode both individually and retroactively when you just binge-watched nearly half the season. But this is the most anticipated new show of this year for me (well, after Better Call Saul) and I'm enjoying it quite a bit and am excited about FanFare discussion of it! I feel like the way that people are going to engage with this show will be so fractured, we won't be able to really talk about it the way that we talk about some other shows.

I think that Netflix is making a mistake with this model...

Wow. I don't think I don't think I could disagree with you more. I suspect if you asked Netflix they'd tell you they're pretty happy with how their original programming is being received.

I feel like the way that people are going to engage with this show will be so fractured, we won't be able to really talk about it the way that we talk about some other shows.

Yeah, this is true. We should've maybe just had a season thread for it? Out of the five comments in the episode 1 thread so far, no one is talking about that episode exclusively and it's a shame.

I flag that shit when I see it and I have been happy to see such things get deleted. There's not a lot of stuff I want to mainline these days but even if I wanted to my employment and parenthood prevent it. It's manifestly selfish to fuck up other people's viewing pleasure just so you don't have to limit yourself.

Guess I'll need to make sure my fanfare reading trails what I have actually seen by a few eps if the cadre of watchers is being jerky that way.

Yeah I think we're better off with season threads for these. I have stuff to talk about but I have no idea which episode thread it should go in.

Might need both, because there's no way I'm allowing someone to spoil this show.

I suspect if you asked Netflix they'd tell you they're pretty happy with how their original programming is being received.

It's cool if you like that they drop entire seasons at once, but it's not like Ivan is a lonely crank for not liking it himself. There's been a growing dissatisfaction among viewers about the all-at-once strategy, especially among the sort of people (TV nerds) that you'd think would be behind it. Over at the AV Club, there have been a lot valid complaints about how instead of just allowing binge watching, it enforces it: if you want to be part of the larger conversation around the show you have to watch the whole thing in a couple days. "It's brand new and it's already over."

There won't be a lot of talk about Jessica Jones a month from now, which is just insane. If it were on weekly, we'd only be up to episode 5 by then and the weekly excitement for a new episode would be palpable. Instead, it'll be long out of the pop culture cycle by then. Sure, the Fanfare threads will still be open, but they'll be guestbooks by that point, not discussions.

I didn't mean to imply Ivan is a crank. I really don't see how you could call what they're doing a mistake though. Delivering the show piecemeal would be diametrically opposed to what they're all about. The season-at-once method has been doing pretty well for them and the "TV nerds" that are dissatisfied are going to be watching anyway, honestly.

At the rate I'm going, I'll probably watch about one episode a week anyway, which is kind of funny.

I do miss having an established time table for viewing. When showing one a week, there was a cycle everyone new about. Now we're just all over place.

And frankly, binging on something as heavy as this isn't the best way to view it, in my opinion. There lots of nuances that I'd like to tease out and think about and to hear others doing the same. Not that I'm not gleefully happy to have all the episodes available at once, so one can binge 2 or three at a time.

ODiV, I'm sorry I put words in your mouth. Not my intention.

Don't even worry about it. I'm obviously out of touch with the commenting-on-TV Internet community even though I slightly interact with what we have here on FanFare. I wouldn't have heard anything about "a growing dissatisfaction" without all of your comments. It's neat to hear different perspectives, especially ones I wouldn't have considered before. I don't miss anything about the commercial-filled, sometimes preempted, inexplicably on a mid-season break, Tuesday now instead of Thursday, oh wait its canceled television of before, but maybe it shouldn't be entirely pitched.

There just has to be a better way than how we're doing it; I'm currently watching something like 8 different threads just for Jessica Jones.
posted by Justinian at 11:16 AM on November 24, 2015 [1 favorite]

I was thinking a season thread that doesn't spoil anything for a week and then is anything goes after that, but it's not built into FanFare and I wouldn't want to impose on the mods. I also don't know if it would be a good fit for here. But general thoughts + impressions for a week and then more in depth after that doesn't seem terrible.
posted by ODiV at 11:43 AM on November 24, 2015

How about threads fir 2-4 episodes? I think thAt reflects how people generally watch, binging a few episodes at a tome.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 11:48 AM on November 24, 2015

To me the best way would be one anything-goes full season thread and then individual episode threads at whatever pace people want. Seems like the best of all worlds.

Make a season thread then

But I'm so lazy?
posted by Justinian at 12:18 PM on November 24, 2015

Yeah, I'm disappointed by the fact that in the first ep discussion thread, people are talking about eps much later in the season. Not everyone has the time to binge 13 hours! Surely that kind of spoilerific discussion is better suited for Rewatch posts, or a Season thread?

Although I binged Jess over a few days I think the dump a full season day one will not be an effective strategy long term, why not just do a long form movie? But I'm also quite PRO spoiler, if I want to be surprised I don't read discussions or dissect trailers.
posted by sammyo at 3:36 PM on November 25, 2015

I think dropping an ep every hundred hours would be cool would be just under two eps a week, and would get all weird and out of synch, and nut jobs like me could end up being omfg, two hours left and getting u at night or watching at work, but normal people would have a couple of days to catch the ep before the next one went up.

I like the idea of having a full season thread right off the bat to hopefully prevent people from putting their musings about what they've seen so far into whatever episode thread is the most recent. Though paradoxically they might avoid that thread because of spoilers.

Have a season thread and a run of first watch threads for each episode

That sounds like a great idea to me, Brandon/ODIV.
