Criterion On Hulu 2016
January 31, 2016 6:43 PM - Subscribe

After taking some time off for the holidays, and then taking another month off for good measure, we're ready to fire up the Criterion On Hulu club for the new(-ish) year. This thread is for folks who'd like to suggest upcoming films.

If you're not familiar with the club, check out the non-binding FAQ in last year's thread. There is one change, however: this year, I'll be posting films on Sunday mornings instead of Mondays.

As of right now, the schedule's wide open. What would you guys like to watch?

Some suggestions:

A Woman Under The Influence - John Cassavetes
Paris Belongs to Us - In honor of the recently departed Jacques Rivette
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul - Rainer Werner Fassbinder
Closely Watched Trains - Jiří Menzel
Ikiru - Akira Kurosawa

I second all of these.

My suggestion is that we revisit 8 1/2 one week. It was posted right when everyone got super-busy, and nobody commented on the thread. I'd love a re-do.

I'm up to 68 movies watched for my post-war Japanese cinema project, but I'm having trouble coming up with a short list of suggestions from among the 60 of them that we haven't already had in the club. I'm still thinking about it, but I've thought of suggesting a brace of Naruse or Kinoshita movies.

I watched 8-1/2 a few years ago when the Criterion Blu-Ray came out but I could probably stand to re-watch it. Has anyone ever seen Nine, the musical adaptation of it? It got terrible reviews and I didn't think much of Marshall's filming of Chicago but I'd like to see it just for completion sake.

Kind of a derail: Nine the film version differed significantly from the stage version. The stage musical is a lighter in tone. It's an unusual musical, but it is still very much a "musical comedy" at least up until Guido's breakdown. Marshall made the film more serious - I think he thought he was bringing it back to be more like 8 1/2, but the result is the musical numbers and the scripted scenes feel like they're from two completely different movies, and it just doesn't really work. (The film, for instance, cuts a plot from the stage version where his producer has contracted him specifically to make a musical film, because he said he would in order to get her money, and she tracks him down at the spa to find out how the script is going.)

Would anyone be interested in doing Colossal Youth at some point?

I watched some Pedro Costa movies during the break (the Fontainhas trilogy plus Horse Money), and I'm already jonesing to rewatch this one. It's very slow paced and not very plot driven, though, so I don't want to do it unless other people want to.

Have you seen In Vanda's Room? It's on Hulu as well, and is a precursor to Colossal Youth.

Yeah, I watched all three--Ossos, In Vanda's Room, and Colossal Youth--and I would be happy to rewatch any of them. I picked Colossal Youth because it was the most polished of the three, and also, I really like Ventura. But the style is one of those love it or hate it things, I guess, and I don't like it when I inadvertently inflict something I love on someone who hates it, so I wanted to just put it out as a question rather than an actual suggestion.

(Also, if anyone is interested, Horse Money, also starring Ventura, is on Netflix US languishing under some absurdly low star rating that serves no purpose besides illustrating its own capriciousness. Harumph.)

February 28: Paris Belongs to Us
March 6: Solaris (Tarkovsky)
March 13: Ali: Fear Eats the Soul

Hey, this all sounds great to me! I somehow have even less time lately (home ownership is even more time consuming than home shopping!) but I am definitely excited to watch with you all. I'll probably watch about 1/2 of these given realities of life but will be very excited to watch and chat when I can!

[Can I just preemptively say that I will always remember the endless scene early in Solaris of driving through a tunnel which put me into a miserable half-sleep?! More commentary to come when the thread posts! I know you're all waiting on baited breath!]

So this should probably wait until the actual discussion, but there's a funny story there. The original plan was to film futuristic structures at the World Expo '70 as a stand-in for a city from the future, but the trip was delayed until the next year.

However, having been given money to go to Japan, they needed to show something for their efforts, so they just filmed the actor driving around for 20 minutes.

Ha ha. That explains a lot!

A Woman Under The Influence has been posted here.

I also updated the Club's event calendar with the schedule I put together above.

Cassavetes didn't seem like a good pick for Valentine's Day so I'll have to catch up this week with A Woman Under The Influence.

I'm really excited for the new service based on what I've read about it so far.

I'm probably going to kill its Fanfare club, too.
