Under the Dome: Awakening
August 18, 2014 11:20 PM - Season 2, Episode 8 - Subscribe

A new sheriff; messages from outside; experimental drugs; a meeting at the Dome.

Also: a Snowden-pastiche hacker; lots of Dean Norris clenched-teeth acting; and the briefly-triumphant return of DJ Phil.

I was going to make the "Not Penny's Boat" joke too. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

What's the record length of time that anyone has actually stayed in jail on this show? I'm wondering if DJ Phil can manage to stay locked up past the half hour mark next week.

The most ridiculous moment was Julia yelling at the Dome. I liked the Dome's decision to play it stoic. They cut away from that scene pretty quickly because, yeah, it made her look ridiculous.

And it's nice to see Sherry Stringfield pop up - it's weird how every woman has to have these long flowing locks - I remember her from E.R.. Hate to talk hair but the show styles every woman through some kind of bland-o-meter.

Anyways I really like the AWKWARD-ness of Colin Ford - he is just so lanky and all sincere right angles. His eyebrows were flying up towards the ceiling last night.

That was some stink-eye Dean Norris was doing at the end, sort of like the Kubrick stare but with teeth.

Barbie's super-sophisticated "Oh, look at that!" tactic with the photograph made me laugh.

I'm calling it now: this whole thing is a paranoid delusion happening in Big Jim's head. Under his dome, if you will.

Oh, hence the opening shot? I thought that was very Breaking Bad: the back of his bald head, the black hat in the locker - had to be intentional, right?

Why isn't outside Chester's Mill more interesting?

Why was the pig farmer needing to sell his possessions for food? Wasn't the diner having a non-stop feast once the hoarder's wife came forward with her stockpile? Or is she profiteering during the crisis?

The comments over at the AV Club this week are priceless.

I like how the writers are just slipping spoonfuls of information into the story, hoping we'll swallow and digest them without noticing. DJ Phil apparently didn't rate a memorial service akin to Angie's and Barbie's. What, he's still alive? In a hospital with no staff? Able to tear down windmills and engage in fist fights with a bullet wound in his chest? Well, he's safely locked up and now we know why there was no memorial service.

Julia also made a miraculous recovery from *her* bullet to the chest. And hadn't Barbie also been shot last season, ie two weeks ago?

Also now we know why there aren't hundreds of weeping family members holding up handmade signs at the perimeter of the dome: Black Shirts have erected thousands of feet of chain link fence in record time. (Brownie, you're doing a heck of a job.)

Not looking forward to: flip flop Junior back with Big Jim. For no good reason. Again.

Best screen shot: Big Jim's billboard. (Billboards are illegal in Maine, btw)

Ok, I'm shamelessly stealing the comment below from Marcus Carab at AVC:

//

"I think there are answers there for us."
"Answers to what?"

Fuck. you.

OMG everyone there's clooz in the site! Go online to this site and type this word! Preferably on your HTC phone running Microsoft™ Windows. It's totally a secret clue no one else will be picked up on. Please like me! Please engage with me! Please!

I'm trying to point to why this episode was so bad. But what it comes down to is lots of bad acting, bad direction, bad editing. And of course a bad script and a bad story, but I'm kind of on board with that bad part. The kid playing ScarecrowJoe is particularly bad and he should feel bad and never act again. I kind of liked nerdy hacker outside kid though. He had a bit of sparkle.

He had a bit of sparkle is good-looking.
