It is a beautiful day at the Red Pony and Continual Soirée.

Was anyone shocked by the reveal that Cady is sleeping with Branch? As she said, it's not like the bench of dateable men is deep in Absaroka County.

For us, it was the second clue that there was more to Branch than met the eye (ahem). Basically, we trusted Cady, as she'd been raised by Walt, so trusted her opinion of Branch.

On another note, I love how Walt's cabin tells part of his story (or, at least, gets us asking the right questions). The missing front steps, the piano that doesn't get played, even its location: backed up against some trees like a cornered animal, but there's nothing out the front but a vast expanse. Absolute kudos to the set designers and dressers.

More specifics on the locations: here's a Google Maps streetview of the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, NM, which is used for various locations, including the staircase and door reading “Absaroka County Sheriff’s Department.” Pan around in the Google Maps view and you'll see that the plaza is used in the series, too.

Here's a Google maps streetview of a random location in Eagle Nest, NM, showing off the mix of high plains and snowy mountains in the background. Pan around, and you'll see Eagle Nest Lake.

And apparently some of the show is filmed in Pecos, NM (Google maps aerial view). I don't know that community well enough to highlight any areas. As it is, following up a story about a young girl who ran away from home and became a prostitute with another story about a young girl who turned to dancing for money while away from her family is pushing this towards CSI: SVU territory. Luckily, that trend of victims and related crimes doesn't continue

On this episode, there are definitely Mennonite communities in Wyoming, and some in New Mexico, but my wife and I recognized the harsh father, Timothy V. Murphy, from Grace and Frankie, and True Detective. And in a sad sort of way, I was happy that Samuel Clausen's sister died due to an accident, because "exotic dancer killed by angry dude/ boyfriend/ father" would have made me really sad for the continued abuse of really young women in related "exotic" fields.
