Great performances this episode, especially Cliff Curtis. And we finally get a moment of emotional catharsis that isn't immediately followed by a cheap death!

I'm really looking forward to finding out how the Madison-Alicia relationship evolves from here, now that they've rededicated themselves to each other. Although I also fully expect Nick to wander back and shake things up again.

Also, according to Talking Dead, the guys who rolled up on the hotel at the end are the apocabros/bromigos... sans Chris. Travis isn't going to be happy about that.

Yeah, I hopped over to the AV Club and was surprised to see that it got a community grade of D+. It was a little slow, but it was also what I was hoping for out of the show:

* The Travis/Chris stuff played out as it had to.
Travis is moral and dedicated, but sort of hapless. Chris is - or was - a budding serial killer, give or take. Their exchange pretty much had to work out with Chris leaving him behind, and I feel like everyone brought their A-game. Hell, even the Apocabros were spot on, I think, especially the doomed one.

(Presumably, their arrival at the door will usher in the end of the Great Hotel Alliance in earnest.)

* The Madison/Not-Lexa stuff was okay.
I will admit I laughed at the suicide note story, but it still rang true. Madison being handed the Idiot Ball still annoys me - I always want to like Kim Dickens - but at least the mother/daughter stuff worked out. Her conversations with Travis were okay too.

When this all started, they said they wanted to do family drama against the backdrop of the apocalypse, and it feels like they're getting a better handle on that part, even if they're no more capable at the 'apocalypse' part than their predecessor.

Basically, TWD fandom is split between a group who just want Gruesome Zombie Killz and a group who want a post-apocalyptic character drama. (With a non-zero overlap!) At their best, the shows cater to both groups. But episodes like last night's that deliver just the character drama are bound to disappoint the group for whom the action stuff is a sine qua non.

Man. Both sides are aiming so low. I want believable people killing zombies where appropriate!

Travis pointing out that the same thing happens over and over again, just with different people, feels like the Fear the Walking Dead writers admitting to a problem with both of the shows in the franchise, without doing anything to correct it.

I do like to give either of the franchises credit when they attempt something arty. They fall short of the mark a lot (A LOT), but I appreciate when they attempt to do something new and interesting with the narrative. Having said that, this thing that they're doing where half of each episode is being told in flashbacks is really not working for me.
