American Horror Story: Chapter Six
October 20, 2016 10:18 AM - Season 6, Episode 6 - Subscribe

"My Roanoke Nightmare" is a smash hit, but having their story known has not done Shelby, Matt and Lee any favors. They return to the house for the next Blood Moon, and Three Days of Hell begin.

Holy shit, this is actually good! That's a weird qualifier for something I've watched five point five seasons of, but this is sort of like looking at the back of the bag of a potato chip with a delicious taste, and realizing it has 0% fat and 100% of every essential vitamin and mineral. It's actually a well constructed horror story, too.

ahahahahaha FINALLY this season finds a striking board for its match. And I was about to give up, too! Alas, my love for Angela Bassett sucks me in every damn time. Evan Peters, too, though I generally think he's got limited range and is kind of a dick in real life (probably).

Kathy Bates feels wasted this season but I'm excited to watch TV execs die horribly for treating human beings like inanimate props -- that scene talking about liability, insurance and alcohol alone was fucking gold.

Last season was lush and musical, this one's crude and genuinely jump-scary. I screamed excessively loud and jumped to my feet during the car-crash scene. Actually, twice, because we rewound and watched again.

Super awesome to live in a house and not in an apt building so I can watch this stuff without pissing off my neighbors from screaming my way through October, lol!

Watching this last night, as soon as she got in the car and the camera switched to that in-dash view, I said that we needed to put our wine glasses down immediately.

I spent most of the rest of the episode with my mouth open in shock at how good this was.

This was great. I'm a little surprised the show telegraphed (almost) everyone's fates the way it did, but to be real about it we've got four episodes left and no reason to believe everyone won't die horribly anyhow, so saying they will is perhaps not much of a spoiler. I was a little unconvinced by the IRL cast's motivations for coming back to the house -- if "My Roanoke Nightmare" was at all accurate, they have to know going back is basically a death sentence -- but this was really my only quibble.

Did anyone else find it curious that IRL Shelby had no issues walking around? Her foot was damn near severed, according to the docudrama. It may not be meaningful, but it made me wonder if that detail had been fabricated.

1) I noticed the real nurse ghosts just look creepy and rotten, and just silently kill Rory, rather than the chatty, attractive ghosts from the reenactment.

2) I assume Matt, Shelby, and Lee made some sort of deal with the Butcher which they lied about, because I can't think of any other reason they all came back. Honestly who knows how much of their stories are self-serving lies?

3) Good grief the car crash.

4) This season is so good. I keep waiting for the campiness to show up but no it's just creepy.

Nice catch. It's easy to forget that, until this episode, we hadn't seen any of the "real" characters other than Shelby, Matt, and Lee. It will be interesting to see how other "real" characters — living or supernatural — differ from their reenactments.

It's nice that the show gives us someone to root against in Sidney. I expect that his comeuppance will be incredibly satisfying.

I'm going to hang my hat on a surprise appearance by Jessica Lang as the "real" butcher.

Personally I'm dying to meet the actress Lady Gaga plays. I really want to hear what she has to say about her role. I'm very impressed by the twist and all the fun we get to have with actors and producers and re-enactments and scares engineered and real. I think we maybe took a bit too long to get here but I'm way more on board with this now than I've been with the series in a long time.

I think the butcher will still be Kathy Bates. I think her accent got better because she's possessed.

Apparently I am the only person who remains intensely underwhelmed by this season. This "twist" was really the only way they could go forward with the set up they had.

I did like the little twist of riling up Kathy Bates to provide "extra scares." But it was still...predictable and meh for me the rest of the time. I was so hoping for something that would justify my continued faith in the show.

This was not it.
