The Battle of Five Rmies!

Also, how did the Hilltoppers know who to shoot at?

A 90 minute episode where nothing happens until the last 15 minutes? Didn't see that coming.

(Just kidding, I totally saw it coming.)

The garbage people turning out to be garbage people was meant to be surprising, I guess, but my partner totally called it based entirely on the head garbage lady's TERFy haircut. Points to her for that one, I guess.

Arg, I meant "the Battle of Five Armies".

I am pleased that Carol (and her biggest fan) and Maggie saved the day.

It was a nice little twist to discover Sasha was actually in a coffin and not in her cell, but it wasn't worth half an episode of cheesy flashbacks. Nor did her character deserve that gratuitous a sendoff.

The show seems intent on destroying any and all suspense it builds up.

Once the confrontation began and tension was building between the Saviors and the Alexandrians... cut to cheesy dream sequence!

Rick and crew seemed to be WINNING the darn fight, then suddenly they were all captured with Rick and Carl on their knees.

And somehow Michonne and what's-her-name were duking it out through the entire fight and subsequent capture.

Honestly, if they cut out the unnecessary Sasha-Abraham-Maggie stuff this was a decent episode. Carl being the one to make the first move was nice. Rick was completely useless, and I'm not sure why Carl or the others who were RIGHT beside him on the parapet didn't take out the leader of the garbage people. Also not sure why Dwight didn't make his move yet, there seemed to be an opportunity.

And somehow in this big battle we managed to not have any significant character deaths.

Including on Negan's side, I think? Am I remembering right that both of the henchmen that the tiger took out were of the disposable-non-speaking-role variety?

Also, I totally did not get the significance of the "didn't know" woodcarving until I read about it in the Vulture recap linked above. Dwight likes to whittle? I hadn't noticed.

I think they said on "Talking Dead" that one of them was the guy Enid talked to at Hilltop (the one who searched the cellar where Maggie and Daryl were hiding). Still insignificant though.

In the Wired recap, they say this episode serves the purpose of the "viewers needed a win". To me it was a punt: despite a close-quarters firefight with a hundred automatic rifles and a tiger, nobody important on any team died (Sasha has been an incidental character at best this season) and nothing really changed from where we were a year ago - I'm out.

It was pretty much a given that Sasha's time on the show would be coming to an end knowing that Sonequa Martin-Green was cast as the lead on the new Star Trek show.

I am surprised that Jadis, Simon, and Negan all survived. But I guess you need Simon around for more the Gregory thing to play out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Negan make a quick exit next season and for the season to focus on the dynamics between all these groups with a power vacuum at the top of the Saviors and the garbage people being garbage people. Unfortunately, "quick" probably means after the mid-season break and too many episodes featuring Dwight and Eugene exploring their man-pain.

You know what? As bad as that episode was in a lot of ways, I walked away happy because the moving blanket that covered the coffin was emblazoned with the logo of a company called Bust a Move Moving.

90 minutes is a small price to pay for a single perfect dad joke.

What the garbage people straight up ride around in garbage trucks.

So. On the nose... pun intended
