When Jessica gets a call from a British solicitor telling her she has inherited her cousin Emma McGill's estate, she heads off to London. The estate in question is primarily a 50% share in the Mayhew Music Hall where Emma and her good friend Oliver Trumbull headline a old style revue that, unfortunately for them, isn't very popular any more. But soon after Jessica arrives, she learns Emma is alive and well. She has faked her death because she believes that someone has tries to kill her on several occasions. Emma has been under pressure to sell her share of the Mayhew and is certain that is behind it all. Suspicion soon falls on Trumbull but both Jessica and Trumbull's daughter Kitty feel that he is innocent. Working with Scotland Inspector Roger Crimmins, Jessica lays a trap.

Jessica is honored to have been invited to Crenshaw College to receive an honorary degree and give the commencement address. The head of the English department is her old friend Dr. Jocelyn Laird. A reception at Jocelyn's home in interrupted when her daughter Daphne Clover, the rich and successful writer of trashy romance novels, arrives unannounced with her boyfriend Nick Fulton. They are loud and rude leaving Jocelyn thoroughly embarrassed. Jocelyn is having other problems as well. She needs to appoint a new Deputy Head for the English department and must choose between Alger Kenyon and Ron Mercer, one of whom will be deeply disappointed with her choice. When Nick Fulton is found dead, Daphne is the immediate suspect, though Jocelyn eventually confesses. Jessica thinks they're both innocent and seeks out the true killer.

Plans for a new hotel in Cabot Cove are interrupted when a skeleton is discovered in a grave on the construction site. Sheriff Tupper believes that the skeleton in the grave is the remains of famous Revolutionary war-hero, Joshua Peabody. However, Dr. Hazlitt argues that Joshua Peabody is nothing but local legend. Despite her friends' bickering, Jessica decides to get to the bottom of things, but things get more complicated when a second body turns up at the construction site, and this one is much more recent.

Jessica is invited to an(other) apparent island paradise, this time with dire concerns from an old friend of hers who has been living an exciting lifestyle as a jet-setting widow. Was the death the result of a burglary gone wrong, or murder made to look like a robbery?

Milt takes JB to a fancy hospital, where trouble is brewing, and a doctor is killed at his home. Lieutenant Ray Jenkins, new to this homicide beat, asks Jessica for help putting the pieces together.

Jessica and sheriff Amos Tupper are headed to the Maine Sheriffs' Association by bus, when they run into a serious storm could delay their arrival, if it doesn't strand them somewhere. Two passengers join along the route, first at a prison, then when a car gets stuck on the side of the road. The bus driver stops a third time, when an engine issue halts their progress, and the passengers get off the bus and into a diner. When Jessica goes back on the bus to look for a book, she finds one of the late arrivals dead in his seat, stabbed with a screw-driver from the toolbox on the bus. Who knew the man would be on the bus, and wanted him dead? Can Jess and Amos solve the case, when they're out of the sheriff's territory and their fellow travelers may not want to cooperate? Helmsley and Horace get into a scuffle, Horace gets drunk and forgets the rest of the evening, while Helmsley ends up dead, and Horace is suspect #1. Can Jessica crack the case?

After the death of her uncle, Jessica finds out she's inherited his 4% interest in a professional football team, the Leopards. She also finds herself in the middle of a boardroom fight between Phil Kreuger, who wants to move the team, and another group of investors, who want to keep the team where it is. When Kreuger is found dead in the team's training room, suspicion falls on one of the players, Zak Farrell, who has a bad shoulder injury but also a four-year no-cut contract. But Zak isn't the only one with a grudge against Kreuger, even though Zak's watch was found under Kreuger. "If [Lt. Clyde Pitts] arrested everybody who's glad Kreuger's dead, he'd have to build a bigger jail."

Patti is seriously wounded but Barry, who's been mugged several times, kills the man with his own gun. It doesn't add up for Jessica however and when an attempt is made on Rita's life, Jessica sets a trap.
