Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: TANF Misuse  Rewatch   Season 10, Ep 4

This week... News on Dominion Voting System's defamation case against Fox News indicating that neither Fox's hosts nor Rupert Murdoch believed Trump's claims of election fraud, with Tucker Carlson being captured in a text as saying, "I hate him passionately." Tennessee passes a drag show ban, because that's the biggest problem facing the state? The anti-LGBT bills come by way of Lt. Governor Randy McNally, who as it turns out has been commenting on social media about racy photos from a gay male influencer. And Now: Happy International Women's Day, From The Men Of Local News. It's as awkward as you think it is. Main story: TANF (on Youtube, 23 minutes), Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. A lot of athletic (for some reason) celebrities are involved, but that obscures the fact hat the $77 million dollars that were misspent in Mississippi caused real harm. But Mississippi is far from alone in abusing the federal TANF program, with states ranging from using it for scolarships to well-to-do families to crisis pregnancy centers to literally nothing at all. Ugh. And Now: The Humble Beginnings of Rachael Ray. [more inside]

One Mississippi: Two Mississippi  Season 2, Ep 0

Season two of Tig Notaro's Amazon series takes us deeper into the lives of Tig's step-father, Bill, and her brother, Remy. Meanwhile, Tig continues to speak honestly on her radio show as Tig and Kate's relationship perpetually redefines itself. Politics come into play, and a Mississippi changed by the election of Trump hangs grotesquely in the background. Also, trigger warning. Very upsetting but necessary discussions of molestation, abuse, and harassment, including scenes of deplorable men being deplorable, also occur this season. And in spite of all that, the show continues to be a funny, even joyous celebration of love and compassion. [more inside]

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Hollywood Whitewashing, Abortion  Season 3, Ep 2

This week.... Donald Trump wins the South Carolina Republican Primary despite a feud with the Pope, and Jeb Bush finishes fourth. Republicans dig in on not confirming whatever replacement Supreme Court Justice Obama nominates. The "Judicial Crisis Network" makes an ad saying Republican senators should not confirm made mostly of smiling faces bought from stock footage sites. Last Week Tonight provides a stock footage rebuttal. How is This Still a Thing: Hollywood whitewashing. This week's main story: breast implants abortion (16m), and the stealth efforts of the right to outlaw it de facto by making it impossible in some states to operate an abortion clinic through the imposition of ridiculously onerous rules. The show finishes up with footage of a bucket of baby slothes -- and one in person, in the studio. Metafilter thread. [more inside]
