I failed to post this for the first game last night, sorry! But here we are for tonight.

I've been an Astros fan since I can remember. I had the Nolan Ryan comic book/biography when I was 4, and am still bitter about the YMCA trip when Tony Eusebio hit one of his (three career) home runs for a grand slam into the bleachers right where we were sitting, to win the game... as we were all in the parking lot "so we'd be back to the Y in time for our parents."

... and I moved overseas last year, so this is my first full baseball season without having seen a game in ... probably 28-30 years.

Go 'stros.
posted by Seeba at 3:33 PM on October 25, 2017 [4 favorites]

I'm rooting for the 'stros. they are division rivals of my hapless Mariners, so we see their excellence many times during the season. they have been rebuilt from within from the ground up (with a few additions like Verlander) which is an admirable way to build a club.
posted by OHenryPacey at 3:39 PM on October 25, 2017

... damn, I looked it up. Thirty career HRs. And two GSs, neither of which fit my memory.

... I'm not looking up any more, I prefer the memory :^)

I live about a 20 minute jog (well, maybe not in this heat) from home plate at Dodger Stadium, and my plan was to buy tickets off StubHub at the last possible second. But, the cheapest tickets yesterday were more than $500 + fees, and today looks only to be slightly cheaper. During the regular season my strategy got me a lot of $15 tickets, but it's not going so well for the WS.

That said, my Dodgers are going to win in 5, but Astros definitely have the best meme this season.

I'm watching at a bar and there's no sound. Raptly watching Vin Scully not quite throw out the first pitch... what was he saying?

Ten minutes after the posted start time, as they go to commercial, without a meaningful ball having been thrown ... I was all set to rant about the start time, but when I went to check it out, ESPN had changed their published time to "delayed".

When did they start televising all the pregame in-stadium material? Start the damned game!

And on preview: LobsterMitten, it was 7 minutes of canned "standup" riffing on how he'd "practiced all week" and now "can't do it, I strained (tore? hurt? Forgot what he said) my rotator cuff, so ooohhh, let's get Valenzuela out of the dugout to do it for me!" (don't get me wrong, I get that this is nice for Dodger fans... but why don't they publish accurate start times?

(don't get me wrong, I get that this is nice for Dodger fans... but why don't they publish accurate start times?

Start times have been actuate for everything but the WS.

The NFL-esqe flag on the field never happens, and for the rest of the games the National Anthem/First Pitch aren't televised. So in truth the start was correct, it was just for the start time of TV part.
posted by sideshow at 5:26 PM on October 25, 2017

Start times have been accurate for everything but the WS.

Ahhhh, got'cha.

... well, to make it up for the (short) delay, Verlander can pitch a ::redacted for good juju:: and the Astros can find their road bats for me...

A pox on your house, bukvich.

... but damn. I almost didn't mind the first hit in the 9th because the ball didn't bounce on the plate, but ugh. Haven't seen a pitcher look that lost in a long time.
posted by Seeba at 8:05 AM on October 29, 2017

Oh I have mellowed at a little since 7:38. But to wake up and my first conscious thought being this is exactly the same as Brad Lidge is extremely unpleasant. I am pulling all the way for Keuchel. If history is a go-by Giles' last act of significance in Houston will be calling an agent and listing his house.

I was driving 59 outside the stadium when Pujols hit that HR. My friend and I, listening to the game on the radio, actually looked around to see if the ball made it the extra block. ... and yet I think I'd still rather have Lidge last night.
