The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: Put That on Your Plate!
November 30, 2017 2:56 AM - Season 1, Episode 7 - Subscribe
With Susie's help, Midge hones her act at the Gaslight. Abe surprises the women with a dinner guest, sending Rose into an emotional spiral. Working towards a promotion, Joel conjures up a new plan. Midge stirs up controversy after meeting a big-time comedian.
The whole show is really really good, but this episode in particular was amazing.

That was a reeaall "Lorelei GIlmore" move right there, Midge.

I was cringing at the bridge Miriam was burning with that routine, but then it occurred to me that if she took the gig opening for that fraud, it would be antithetical to her whole character. Good for her speaking truth to power. It sets up a nice conflict for her and Susie to overcome rather than something that feels externally imposed.
Also, did anyone catch the multiple instances of the “Mares eat oats” song? This always makes me think of Twin Peaks and reminds me that Amy S-P is pretty clearly a big fan.

Ah, so painful to watch those last five minutes. I rarely talk to the TV, but I was doing it then. "Stop that self-destructive behavior, Midge!" Reading some of the comments here helps me process a little better.
I adore this series, but this episode hit me so bad at the end, especially feeling for Susie, that I haven't been able to bring myself to watch the season finale yet. My wife keeps asking when, and I keep answering when it doesn't hurt so much.

I appreciate some of the defense of this behavior as discussed in these comments but I really don't think it was in her character to "out" someone like that. And that was also a shitty thing to do to Susie so, I am bummed.

Electing to jettison her finely-honed act in a kind of meaningless gesture of kindness that will not make her mother feel any better but will make life harder for her and Susie? I can buy that, that's the Midge we've gotten to know so far. Spreading gossip about a celebrity who was mean to her didn't really make sense to me, just seems like a cheap way to ratchet up the tension for the finale.

It was strange indeed. Midge has a bit of an unhinged mean streak, not to mention that her West Side glass house is closer in square footage to Ms. Sophie Lennon's than any Gaslight patron's, so what's her end game here?
