This episode is very much like the pilot: mundane writing in a tug of war with an interesting story. The scenes with Chris Line's reporter are mind numbing. (Not his fault. The storyline is just unnecessary.)

This is extremely clunky, moreso than one might normally detect as it wasn't released in a "binge package". Watching these episodes in isolation leaves me profoundly underwhelmed, though the shitty writing might not be quite so apparent if it was the whole season all at once. Which sounds counter-intuitive, but here we are.

I'm trying to understand why Patty Jenkins wanted to get this into production - the story is interesting but the whole Black Dahlia thing is mostly in conspiracy theory territory. I'm just trying to see the appeal and it's sort of interesting and fucked up but not TV miniseries level.

Any one read the book this is based on?
