Yeah, in this case it turned out in favour of the team I'm rooting for, but a several minutes long break is not good in soccer.

And so the NOR-AUS ref seems to just be letting everything go?

This game is more exciting than I expected it to be, particularly since I don't have a favorite.

Upon further shallow reflection I might be rooting for Norway only because I like their kit better.

Ugh, the BBC website seems to have decided that because the match went past 90 minutes it's just not going to let me reconnect to the stream. Quite vexed. That'll learn me to forget that now we're past group stage, a game cannot end on a tie!

This has been a very good game! The refereeing is a bit lax but both sides are playing well.

Holy crap, a red card just now? This is going to get more interesting.

posted by TwoStride at 2:22 PM on June 22, 2019

Norway player was making a run and Kennedy brought her down, the card was for "denying an opportunity to score a goal." VAR reviewed but upheld.

Norway should have picked up a second yellow, both teams should be down a player but this is Calvinball reffing.

On way to Valenciennes for the teatime game, it's warming up, with forecast of 28C for KO time, quite dry though. That's what the BBC say anyway. TV on wall is saying 19C. Quite a big difference. Potentially impactful? We're at the start of what looks like a week long heatwave, BBC is saying 32C (TV at lille station=17C) for the USA game tomorrow. Ouch.

The Guardian is being EXTREMELY shitty toward Cameroon, which is a mode they've long employed toward African and Asian teams in particular.
posted by TwoStride at 9:27 AM on June 23, 2019 [1 favorite]

Wow, they didn't like that in the stadium. Cameroon looking pretty solid in defence, better than England maybe but the latter less tested.

It is pretty close in the stadium, can see players running out of steam in second half.

Can anyone clarify what happened before the first goal? I was distracted by my server, and there seemed to be 2 or 3 things going on....
posted by GenjiandProust at 9:31 AM on June 23, 2019

It was a back pass, GandP: the England player's shot went across the goal and the closest Cameroon player, standing about three yards in front of the goalie, sent the ball back to the goalie who then picked it up with her hands rather than clearing with her foot as required. There was a brief VAR review, I think, to decide whether the pass had been "deliberate" but if nothing else the short distance sort of doomed it. Either way you can understand the reflex, but it was poor communication and poor clearing.

OK, thanks, that makes it clearer. The announcers on the channel I’m watching are sort of unhelpful, or maybe it’s the captioners....

posted by GenjiandProust at 9:47 AM on June 23, 2019 [1 favorite]

I agree with the comment a Guardian reader just threw up that this--much like goalkeeper movement--is a misuse of VAR. VAR should be to catch obvious fouls and important questions of possession (ie, corner or goal kick). It should not be to enforce literally a game of inches. If that's the case just do away with human refs altogether and let robots call the game.
posted by TwoStride at 9:52 AM on June 23, 2019 [7 favorites]

This game is still bullshit but kudos to Cameroon for coming out of halftime with much better passing and concrete ideas for what to do in the final third. Some nice attempts on goal for them (one of which totally should have counted).

US defence seems to have a yard or two on Spanish attack. Spain not getting much into the other half and struggling for ideas once they get there, hoofing up and hoping it drops for the shorter striker too hit and hope. I got the impression Spain would like to try and press fairly high but aren't getting much opportunity to do so.

Was that an elbow by rapinoe? Spanish player went down very late but not a good view from here.

VAR was an absolute bollox in the stadium. No idea what was going on, particularly at the point that the ref appeared to make a call for the second pen but then was persuaded into VAR by Spanish players. Serious bottling by the ref. Really breaks the atmosphere.
posted by biffa at 2:05 AM on June 25, 2019 [4 favorites]

biffa, it wasnt just in the stadium - the broadcasters were equally clueless, including the distinct possibility that the sweden canada match was still under review for a possible hand ball even after the game had, for all intents and purposes, clearly finished. (in the end it was either not under review or the review resulted in no change, couldnt tell you which).
posted by Exceptional_Hubris at 7:32 AM on June 25, 2019

I've been watching rugby recently, and the system there seems decent (if not affordable for all football nations): You can hear everything the on-field and VAR refs say, and there's a big screen in the stadium where you can see the replay footage that both sets of refs are watching while they watch it.
