My first reaction to seeing Misato's flashback: "What the shit?!?"

Then it gets even weirder, after a party for Misato's promotion, Gendo and Fuyutsuki (who I thought was going to go the entire series with just the name "Deputy Commander") revisit Antarctica and boy howdy, is it FUBAR.

Being a cartographer at NERV is steady work. Always gotta draw new craters!

Flashback is super bleak. As it should be, but I’m surprised the show went that hard. The tone is all over the place.

Not sure what Misato’s promotion means effectively since she was already in charge of the fighting and seems to have very broad discretion in how to carry it out.

I think I agree with Asuka about something.

Hello. Finally all caught up. This is my first time watching NGE after having known about it for years and years.

Nothing like a good explosion, blast wave, and resulting crater.

That flashback was pretty bleak. It's amazing how far society has rebounded since Second Impact. (What was First Impact, do we eventually find out? If we do, don't tell me.)

This is a first watch for me as well, but my guess would be the First Impact was the explosion that wiped out the dinosaurs. Fits with the terminology and the cover story that the Second Impact was a meteor.

Were the dinosaurs wiped out by a meteor impact, or were they wiped out by dinosaur angels?

Anyway, Shinji finally received validation from his dad! I'm sure everything is going to be just fine from here on out!

The music for this operation isn't the standard "Decisive Battle" track, it's got a lot of horns and reminds me of bullfighting. Wrangling Sahaquiel is almost like that, maybe.

That overlook over Tokyo-3 in the dusk is one of my favorite scenes, glad it made a comeback.

The unique designs for the Angels continue. What if eyes, but incredibly big?

Nthing that Misato's flashback was extremely bleak. The near-monochromatic orange tone to the scene sorta reminded me of the apocalyptic Mount Fuji in Red & Weeping Demon segments from Akira Kurosawa's 1990 film, Dreams.

Misako asking these 14 year olds if they want to write out their wills and all of them responding no, they aren't planning on dying today! Man.

Asuka talking about "the Second Impact Generation" having a poor-person image (in response to Misato talking up taking them out to a steak dinner as a treat) was another interesting bit of worldbuilding, especially in conjunction with the very bleak Second Impact flashback from the beginning of the ep.

Felt kinda proud of Shinji for his resolve before the fight, after Misato told him about her dad. "Right. Don't run away."
