RuPaul's Drag Race UK: The Royal Queens
October 8, 2019 4:15 PM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

In this premiere episode, the queens all meet for the first time before joining RuPaul who surprises them with an outrageous photoshoot challenge.

The first ten queens from around the UK enter the UK werk room. RuPaul arrives to introduce the queens to the first ever mini-challenge, a headless photoshoot with the Brit Crew. Scaredy Kat surprises as the winner of the mini challenge. For the Maxi-challenge, each queen were to prepare two runway looks for the main stage in front of RuPaul, Andrew Garfield, and co-judges Michelle Visage, and Alan Carr: one based on their hometown, and the other being adaptations of looks by Queen Elizabeth II throughout her life.

During the judges' critiques, Baga Chipz, Sum Ting Wong, and The Vivienne were praised for their looks and runway presentations, with the latter queen winning the first ever Drag Race UK maxi-challenge. Cheryl Hole, Gothy Kendoll, and Vinegar Strokes were criticized for their looks, all missing the mark with their Queen Elizabeth realness looks, while Hole was commended for her hometown look of Essex. Hole was declared safe from the bottom two, whilst Kendoll and Strokes lip-synced against each other to Dua Lipa's "New Rules"; Strokes won the lip-sync, while Kendoll became the first queen to sashay away from the runway on Drag Race UK.

I'm going to rewatch but on first watch this show seems fresher. Maybe I'm just pleased by the accents but the general quality of the contestants seems really high, like All Stars high.

There's also a Canadian (Crystal) and I laughed when the queens pointed out that he had an accent. True! But not to me at all.

It was interesting how they incorporated the content that would form Untucked in the US version into part of the main show.

Awh, I'm sad Gothy went first, I loved her looks. I think this a fun cast, a nice mix of older queens with actual performing chops and younger Instagram lewks-focused queens.
