October 28, 2019 8:23 AM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

Single mom Eve Fletcher (Kathryn Hahn) packs up her son Brendan (Jackson White) for college, and tries to figure out what's next. Mrs. Fletcher airs on HBO, and is adapted from Tom Perrotta's novel of the same name by Perrotta and director Nicole Holofcener.

I went into this thinking it would be the new Sexy HBO Show, but somehow it ended up being a riveting character study. Hahn is doing great work as a person who is clearly right on her own personal edge of fucking losing it, and she knows it and is only barely holding herself together enough to hold herself together.

I think we're going to see more of the son and get a better sense of him beyond "Caddish big fish who has left his small pond", but we're not there yet.

Thumbs up. Will continue to watch.

Kathryn Hahn was as great as you'd expect, but if they intend for me to empathize with the son character in the next few episodes they might have really overcommitted on how much of a piece of shit he is.
