Creepshow: Gray Matter/The House of the Head
December 1, 2019 4:51 PM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

This is the debut episode of the Shudder original anthology horror series, inspired by the two Creepshowfilms by Stephen King and George Romero. The series is produced by Greg Nicotero. In the first segment, a grieving father living with his son develops a drinking problem with severe consequences. In the second, a young girl discovers a strange toy head in her newly acquired dollhouse.

This show very much nails the 1980's horror anthology vibe in this episode. Spooky, self-contained yarns with good actors having a ball. You might wonder if they made an effort to update the show to be more timely or topical or even just to be more ambitious since this is, after all, the golden age of television. At least in these two episodes, they did not, really. I am totally okay with that.

If you like the Creepshow movies and shows like Tales from the Darkside this is, at least to this point, right in line with those.

I assume that's based on King's "Gray Matter" that's collected in Night Shift?

It is indeed.

I loved the first part, but the second one fell totally flat for me. Which is fine, it's what anthologies do.

Just FYI I've already seen the whole season and I think maybe just doing a whole season post would be a good idea.
