Walt stares at himself in the mirror—as if to persuade himself as much as the dealer—and says, “It’s for defense. Defense. [pause] I’ll take it.” It’s a lie; it’s the truth. It’s the truth to Walter, anyway.Roomba-cam! [poor quality, sorry]

Watching Mike outsmart Walter over and over again, culminating with punching him in the face is super satisfying.

Walt has always used chemistry in the past. Mercury fulminate or ricin. So now he wants to go up against Mike and Gus with a snub nosed .38? It's an effective defensive weapon, but only if you are good, and close, and lucky. And it's something you could buy with no paperwork at any gun show, untraceable if you buy it in a private sale, so why all the cloak and dagger? All I can think is that it is a sign that he is falling apart.

Plus this once again sets the stage for Skyler to correctly guess that he's in serious danger and for Walt to dickishly fulminate about how wrong she is, and oh it's just just maddening.
