With the arrival of Hush I figured Mouse wasn't too long for this world. Fake Bruce Wayne was quite a surprise, however.

I hope there is a plan for Jacob other than having him continue to be the worst.

And it was just announced that Ruby Rose is leaving the show and the role will be recast.

Oof. I'm sorry to see her go. I hope that if it's because of the stunt injury that she's not going to be stuck with chronic pain forever. And I also hope that there's not something toxic going on behind the scenes that we only find out about after the damage is done like with Andrew Kreisberg's sexual harassment.

Recasting is going to be a bear.

Ruby Rose leaving is a huge shocker. I do wonder if it's an unsafe or toxic set because a crew member was paralyzed as well.

Storywise it's a pity they killed off alt!Beth because having her take over the cape would have been a great story move (although she would not have the combat skills Kate does, but they could find a way around that).

As far as recasting goes, two women who are not big names but are young enough, androgynous enough, Canadian and can do action are Kelly McCormack (formerly of Killjoys) and Rachael Ancheril (who did a stint on Discovery S2 and the final season of Killjoys).

I haven't seen this episode yet (I think I mentioned in another thread I'm way behind in my TV watching, and now SHIELD is coming back, and my to-be-watched pile is going to get even deeper) but I did want to pop in for the Ruby Rose departure discussion.

I've noted in the last few discussions that it seems like it's always a stunt person subbing in for the actress during the fight scenes, so I suspect the physical aspects of the job are one of the reasons for the departure, although that's an assumption made with no actual knowledge of the situation. Still, I do hope that whoever is chosen as the replacement is more comfortable doing some of the stunt work herself (whether due to training or not being injured shooting this show, etc.)

AltBeth would have been a really interesting option.

I have a huge crush on Kelly McCormack and don't doubt she'd ... crush the role of Batwoman, but it might stretch incredulity of the disguise a bit since the exposed parts of her face while in costume are very singular.

Variety is reporting that "Rose was unhappy with the long hours required of her as the series lead, which led to friction on the set" according to multiple sources.

The leads on these shows do put in a crazy amount of work. I seem to recall there was an issue with Tom Welling being worked insane hours on Smallville to the point where some of the cast threatened to leave the show (and maybe that's why he was given producer credit?), and there was AJ Apa's car accident a year or two ago after working long hours on Riverdale.

And the latest news is that Stephanie Beatríz has thrown her hat into the ring. YES PLEASE.

I'd be interested to see where she would pitch her voice for the role. If you are not familiar with what she sounds like when she's not playing Rosa, go find a video of an interview with her. It will BLOW your MIND.

Finally caught up.

I was surprised by Mouse's fate. I certainly wasn't expecting that.

I have no idea why the Crows wouldn't just shoot Batwoman in the head/face, especially as they saw they were getting nowhere with body hits.

Losing Ruby Rose will either mean no Kara-Kate flashbacks (etc.) or reshoots of Kara-Kate flashbacks.

Another actor who I think would be great is Briana Venskus who plays Agent Piper on Marvel Agents of S. H. I. E. L. D. and who also played Agent Vasquez on Supergirl. She has a great Instagram with some amazing lockdown content btw.

It's weird watching knowing Ruby Rose is a short-timer.

I wouldn't mind if there were no single person being Batwoman, but Mary, Sophie, Julia and Parker could all take turns in the suit depending on whose skills were needed or who was available. They could even slot in guests from time to time.

Thematically, Batman has gone missing. If Batwoman goes missing that opens up space for a new "Robin"/"Nightwing"/"Woman-Bat", etc...

And here's a twist. Deadline reports ‘Batwoman’: Title Character To Have New Identity Following Ruby Rose’s Exit.

Unless there is some time jump or alternate universe shenanigans that doesn't seem to make a lot of sense given where the story left off and the relationship between Kate and most of the characters.

I've read online speculation that the new character might be Stephanie (Spoiler/Robin/Batgirl) Brown. As far as I know, she has never been in a same-sex relationship in the comics, even if fanfic tends to pair her with Cassandara (Orphan/Batgirl/Black Bat) Wayne). Steph and Timothy Jackson (Robin/Red Robin/Drake) Drake Wayne were originally a couple. Then, (I think) she ended up dating some male cop.

As for how they write Kate off, that should interesting, especially since she is supposed to be one of the Paragons.

The thought struck me last night that now would be the perfect time to introduce Luke's sisters and have one of them take over the mantle. That way we could have somebody whose family is connected to Batman legacy wearing the cape and we could have not just a sister and sister dynamic but a true (and hopefully healthy) brother and sister dynamic, not just Alice and Mouse. Plus we'd get a woman of colour leading a show.

Didn't expect Mouse murder. It felt very Sylar from Heroes, i.e. "eh, fuck it, let's just have him kill people for no good reason."

I hate that they are getting a new character. That would pretty much throw out everyone established already. Really, if any show is set up to do the soap opera recast, it's this one because LITERALLY PEOPLE HAVE THEIR FACES REMOVED.

Actually, what I'd really love is if the actress who plays Alice ended up playing both roles, like identical twins. Except that'd be even worse workload issues, I guess.

Hey, whoever wants to post the Batwoman S2 premiere thread or any of the returning DC-CW shows and/or new network shows I'd normally be posting, please have at it. I'll be in lurk mode for a bit, taking care of my mom as she's recovering from a fractured pelvis, not sure when I'll be able to catch up on all my shows.
