Charlie Brooker's 2014 Wipe (2014)

Charlie Brooker reviews the year known formally as 2014. The end of the year is often marked by a morbid sense of self-reflection, so why not laugh at others instead?

2014 was a gruelling year of violence and confusion. The news was a horror show and our culture was replaced by hashtags. The high point was people dousing themselves in buckets of iced water like penitent monks. Even on television, things got grim. Remember Benefits Street? Remember Tumble?

As is tradition, Charlie Brooker peers deeply into this annus horribilis to make sure no old grievances are forgot. As is tradition, you will find yourself getting worn out around September: a year’s worth of vitriol is a lot in one dose. But it’s a necessary rite to round off 2014, one last cleansing shower of bile before we do it all again. Roll on 2015.

The writer and broadcaster takes a satirical look back at the events of the past year, casting his eye over the news, film, TV and social media. Among the stories he reflects on are the ice-bucket challenge craze, Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow's marriage ending in what they called a `conscious uncoupling' and the poppy installation at the Tower of London to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Featuring contributions by Diane Morgan, Al Campbell and Jake Yapp.

Feels bleaker than previous ones. Also lacked that great clip of the old lady saying "The Pope? You're joking!" Also lacked a Cunk section, which is a shame. I'd like Cunk presenting Adam Curtis, that'd be a fun combination! Reasons to be Fearful was extremely splendid!

This left me feeling about as bleak as the Christmas Black Mirror.
