What We Do in the Shadows: The Siren
October 10, 2021 10:26 AM - Season 3, Episode 7 - Subscribe

Two travelers are shipwrecked and a doll runs away from home.

Our vampire family splits up this week as Lazlo and Colin steal a boat and end up aground with a very local Siren, Sheila. While Nandor and Nadja attempt to powershare the vampiric council, baby doll Nadja runs away to find someone who can pay more attention to her needs. And, was Kristen Schaal's Guide trying to eat Guillermo or seduce him?

The episode open, Lazlo and Colin Robinson just stealing a boat, absolutely had me in stitches. If they said why they were doing it in the beginning* I missed it, just those two guys explanationlessly stealing a party boat was truly one of the funniest things I've seen on tv in ages. And then Scabby! What a wonderful, wonderful show.

*based on the end conversation it was to do some energy vampire research I gather?

They only explained after stealing the boat - they were going to "Plum Island" which apparently has something to do with the origins of Energy Vampires and is currently a government animal disease research centre.

Scabby!

I'm very curious about the other time(s) someone has gotten excited and pooped on Colin Robinson's shoe 🤔

This and the previous episodes have been my favorites in the entire series so far.

I enjoy the way they're branching out into the other mythical creatures inhabiting Staten Island and the surrounding waters - Sheila the Siren, the hellhound, the gossipy gargoyles. I hope we get a Sphinx; I want to see some ludicrous riddle solving.

I also hope they eventually make it to Plum Island to investigate energy vampires.

Nadja the doll is not my favorite character, but I did like her hitting the road with her tiny bindle and then jumping from host to host. Melodramatic ghost rat was fun.

Absolute *chef's kiss* sign-off where you wonder if Colin Robinson is going to listen to the radio and long for his lost lady and instead we get...Colin Robinson.

Was that Best Buy trip product placement? It kind of had the feel of those SNL commercial integration bits, where it's not really flattering to the corporation but the logo is still all over the place. I thought it was a really fun episode overall but that sequence kind of weirded me out because I wasn't sure if it was a sneaky ad. It wouldn't be the first time that WWDITS vamps have been used in a weird commercial deal.

I feel like Nadja is never more entertaining and relatable than when she's losing her shit. Her ranting when she couldn't find her little ghost friend was basically me every time my cat used to get lost. "Come back, my little stupid angel baby! I love you so much, you dumb piece of shit!" And there was something so weirdly adorable about Colin mending ghost-Nadja's doll shoe!

And, was Kristen Schaal's Guide trying to eat Guillermo or seduce him?

Oh, I think she has a huge crush. She offered to give him a handy a few episodes ago, and now it seems like she gets off on just touching stuff in his room.

I was creeped out when Laszlo and Colin attacked the party boat and threw the corpse over the side. It's good to have these occasional reminders that these lovable characters just straight-up murder people all the time. But I think Nandor's commitment to evil is really wavering, with him even trying to sponsor a charity run for humans. (Nobody's buying the "healthier humans means healthier food for us" thing, buddy.)

Did he say the women were excited? I was assuming that he bored them until they went into such a heavy daze they lost control of their bowels.

With that singing voice, Colin has no doubt ruined a thousand karaoke nights.

Captioning had it as nyconnex.com, btw, and whois reports that it's owned by Disney.

I read it as sexual. After what they did with Colin Robinson gleefully examining Guillermo's poop in the season opener, I figure they're building him into a coprophile. Don't know how that connects with him as energy vampire, although I suppose that dealing with a coprophile would be rather draining.

This is so totally accurate that I learned something about myself reading it. No wonder I loved Nadja in this episode.

My favorite thing about this show is how inventive & creative they are. They're using old tropes as fuel but making me feel like I'm hearing & seeing something completely new, which is one of my favorite things. I never know what's coming on this show & I love it.

I wonder how many camera crews the documentary has gone through.

A spin off show focusing on the camera crew could also be hilarious.
