I’m not sure how everyone wants to go about this - my idea was just to have a group that anyone can add the GA book they’ve just read, (or their favourite books) for discussion. Or would people prefer a more structured approach with group reads, etc.?
Is there a way to connect FanFare book posts to this club for visibility?

If you click on the tag ‘goldenagemysteries’ that’ll do it. Is there another way to do clubs? I forget.

If you add the Club tag “goldenagemysteries_club” then it gets added to the club itself - so it’s in My Fanfare of members, and accessible from the club page. (I’ve already added the tag in this case.)

My December reading queue is full, but would anyone like to make a recommendation for us to read & discuss for January?

It'll be my first time reading it, how exciting. I'll aim to be able to contribute SOMETHING to the discussion by Jan 15.

Happy 2022, Team Golden Age Mysteries!
Just bumping this in case anyone needs a reminder about this month's book, Crossed Skis. I can't wait to read this classic and hear what y'all think!

I didn't get started as early as I thought I would, but I'm aiming to be done by the end of the weekend!

I'm at 35% percent completion and should finish this weekend. When a post goes up, I'm happy to add some thoughts, wherever I may be in the book.

Just for reference, if you want it to turn up on the club page, you need to add the club tag: "goldenagemysteries_club". (I’ve added it in this case).

I agree. I am hesitant to suggest a title for March, because I seem to be less broadly read in this genre than many of you. I had never heard of Carol Carnac and it turns out my library has loads of her books available on Hoopla, so thanks for that tip!

I find the British Library Crime Classics very helpful for finding new-to-me authors - both the novels they’ve reprinted, and the short story collections. That’s how I found Carol Carnac (and her alter ego ECR Lorac). The Shedunnit podcast is also great (assuming you like podcasts).
I’ll throw out The Division Bell Mystery as a suggestion, simply because it’s not often you get a mystery set in the House of Commons, and written by an amp.

We should chose something from Andrew Dickson Carr, Earl Stanley Gardner, Georgette Heyer, Dorothy Sayers (I nominate Gaudy Night), Ngaio Marsh, maybe Simenon? Josephine Tey, I guess I’ll grit my teeth and reread Daughter of Time, which was apparently named the greatest mystery of all time. I first read it as a teenager because I heard it was amazing, and I assumed from the title that it was a science fiction story with time travel in it, and I never got over the shock.
Any more authors we should cover?

I’ve never heard of The division Bell and would be fine giving it a go.
Currently reading the first Nicholas Strangeways book and enjoying it so far.

Off-hand - Anthony Berkeley / Frances Iles, Christianna Brand, Gladys Mitchell, Edmund Crispin, Patricia Wentworth, Cyril Hare would all be some of the more well known possibilities. There's also people like Elizabeth Daly, Moray Dalton, or some of the other less well known authors that Dean Street Press (among others) are republishing.

I'd be suspicious of the Ricardian Society doing vote-stuffing. I preferred some of her others myself, but I guess it depends a bit on what the aim is - the author's most "important" work, one that might be a good intro to someone not familiar to the author, or just any random book that's easily available?

Like a few other authors*, most of Tey's books aren't really mysteries, and Daughter of Time is one of them. It's a book I really like, and it opened my eyes to some stuff, but it's not really a mystery even if you're not one of the folks who want strict adherence to Detective Club rules.
*Margery Allingham, you mostly write thrillers.

Did anyone else end up reading The Division Bell Mystery? I can make a post, unless people are still working on getting to it and would prefer to hold off a bit.
