Slay the Spire is a roguelike deck-building video game developed by American studio MegaCrit and published by Humble Bundle. The game was first released in early access for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux in late 2017, with an official release in January 2019. It was released for PlayStation 4 in May 2019, for Nintendo Switch in June 2019 and for Xbox One in August 2019. An iOS version was released in June 2020, with an Android version released in February 2021.

I just picked this up a few days ago on Switch and am enjoying it! I have gotten as far as the end of Act 3.

Just thought I'd throw a post up here in case others wanna theorycraft or chat about it.

This is a great game, and has spawned a raft of similar deck-building games (some good, some not so good) in the intervening years. None of the ones since has quite matched it in terms of replayability for me - it always feels like there's another build out there to try (though you never quite get the cards you want!), another strategy, etc.

Like many computer games, I am ok but not great with this one - when I played regularly, I think I got to Ascension 3 with one or two of the characters, and when I finally beat the game on normal with the Monk I took a long, long break (I really struggle with the Monk), and now I play it every once and a while, trying to get to the final fight after the Act 3 boss and win (with anything other than the Monk).

Did my first run last night with the third hero (the robot person) and had a blast.

I'm playing on switch but I'm a veteran of Hearthstone and Mt:G so I had basically no learning curve for this game. That's fine, I didn't need that for a challenge.

The killer feature of this game for me is the PvE options! It's such a great idea!!!!!!! Allowing me to Choose my own Adventure and mix of PvE vs PvP based on my mood is such a great feature. Also the randomness of the relics is a nice touch -- a lot of other games seem to be adding that rng lever lately (augments in TfT, prizes in Hearthstone, etc)

Okay the robot hero is completely overpowered compared to the red healing one and the green poison / card draw one, no?

I'd owned it on playstation 4 and pc for ages but it didn't really hook me until I had it on my phone.

Maybe I just haven't got the hang of the others yet, but my most consistently successful runs are with the poison/card draw one. But I never use the poison & just try to cycle as many zero cost daggers through as quick as possible along with the one power that boosts dagger damage.

Okay this game is a sneaker...I got this and Dead Cells at basically the same time and Dead Cells completely took over my attention for 20 hours and then fell off because when opening up the Switch menu and looking at them both, I kept choosing Spire...

Oh my god, so happy to find this thread and realise it's not just me. I cannot stop. I didn't think I would be into this but I am Very Into This.

lazaruslong, if you're still around, what is PvE and PvP?

hahah yeah I'm here, and still LOVE slay the spire.

PvE = player versus environment
PvP = player vs player

Really I was using them as common shorthand and somewhat incorrectly, but was trying to convey -- I love that I have choices on the Spire climb path where I can opt to go for a battle (PvP) or a "puzzle" shrine (PvE)

Sometimes I don't wanna fight, I just wanna answer a question and make a Sophie's Choice, ya know? 😆

haha oh yes! honestly the game is kinda repetitive (obviously, that's the type of game it is), and I've been wondering why I'm still obsessed and not bored, but I think that might be part of it. That and the terrifying lows, the dizzying highs, the creamy middles! One turn last night I did all the HP calculations, realised I was about to die, played Blasphemy to go out in a blaze of divinity only to realise one of my relics was Lizard Tail. The pain, the regret!
