All That Glitters: Britain's Next Jewellery Star: The jewellers are back in the workshop for seaon/series two
September 3, 2022 1:35 PM - Season 2 (Full Season) - Subscribe

With a new judge (but sadly not a new host) the jewellery-making competition has returned.

I'm putting this up as a full season because
a) I'm not sure if anybody is still watching it;
b) the first two episodes have aired, and I didn't want to jump in without acknowledging both of them.

I'm happy to do individual posts (if we decide we want that instead) or hand over the posting duties to somebody else (as I'm never sure when I'll get a chance to actually watch the episodes).

Episode one challenges: statement earring (bestseller), nameplate necklace (bespoke)
Episode two challenges: spinner ring (bestseller), nameplate necklace (bespoke)

I love Katherine Ryan, although I accept she is like vegemite. I've recently taking up beading and it's fun being able to follow about a third of the terms they use and go 'oh that's how that's made', although I have next to no interest in jewelry. I hope with the cut down of contestants, they'll have time to go into the design process and choices that people are making.

And damn, I want the spinner ring with the words on it.

Like a lot of reality shows, I really wish they spent more time on the actual jewellery and the making of it--I feel like we barely get to see the finished pieces once they're completed. There certainly wasn't enough time to take in the details of the hairpins, for instance. And with that challenge in particular, I feel like we should have been shown the hair pins in the client's hair. I get the feeling the host has thicker and heavier hair than the client--i.e. hair that could better support a heavy pin.

I can't say I liked the nameplate necklaces. I especially questioned the people writing the nameplate in a language the client doesn't speak, but maybe that's just me.

I think, so far, they've eliminated the correct contestants, but beyond that, I haven't really formed any opinions about the jewellers.

Maybe I shouldn't have put my feelings about the host into the main host, but I don't find her funny. She's just grating to me, but I never respond well to that try-too-hard vibe.

I thought Kathleen Ryan was marginally less annoying than in the last series, so maybe someone has had a word wirh her and she's toned it down a bit. I still find her annoying though. dinny Hall is a great improvement on last season's judge, and even I have heard of her!

Ugh, I just realized I've got a typo in the description. It should read:
Episode two challenges: spinner ring (bestseller), hairpin (bespoke)

I can't stand Katherine Ryan but she is not as cringey as she was last season. Dinny Hall is great, and I'm so glad Solange Whats-her-face didn't come back. Sean's teeth are distracting; when people have veneers that are so large, blindingly white and perfectly even and straight they look like the cheapest NHS dentures. But he is supportive and encouraging and neither him nor Dinny are deliberately mean, unlike Solange, who was, I thought, unduly critical.

Production lessons have been learned from last season. The new venue is much more spacious so it's easier to film and to see more of the creative process - which is, after all, the whole point of the show. I love seeing how the contestants create such diverse pieces from the same basic materials.

I have been so pleased at how encouraging and positive Dinny and Sean have been!
