I know that this is a big step down from Part I by most accounts, but I was the exact right age to simply want more of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi. And I had the hugest crush on Tamlyn Tomita. I have researched this and I can see the wobbliness, but the spell still worked on me.

Same. Back in '86 my dad and I saw this in the theater together. I don't know why it was just the two of us without my mother. But that scene after Miyagi Sr. dies, when Daniel talks to Mr. Miyagi about his own father's death just, oof. My dad's father died when I was 5, so, there was something almost unbearably intimate for teenage-me to be watching that scene sitting next to my dad, wondering how he was feeling watching it.

Whatever flaws/issues this movie has as sequels go, it still had the Daniel+Miyagi relationship magic at its core.

I had the hugest crush on Tamlyn Tomita

"have". The verb form here is "have".

I did not see the first one in theaters but I think one of my sisters rented it from the local video store, so I'd seen it by the time this one hit. And this one, I watched in the theater. There feels like a lot of wish fulfillment in the first one (Daniel gets to drive Miyagi's cool old car! He gets to win the tournament with the one move he knows!) that gets set aside in this. It's a slightly crueler movie, maybe the villains are written with very very broad strokes, and maybe their redemption is a little flatter than could have been, but I enjoy this one a lot.
