Mafia Mamma (2023)

An American mom (Toni Collette) inherits her grandfather's mafia empire in Italy. Guided by the firm's consigliere (Monica Bellucci), she "hilariously" defies everyone's expectations as the new head of the family business.

Weak, unfunny, weirdly gory script that even Collette and Bellucci can't do much with.

Too bad. I like Collette and Bellucci. I've been sick and tired of Italian Mafia stories since about 1985—especially comedic takes on Italian Mafia stories. So I'll skip this one.

I gotta think that comedy filmmaking depends as much on the people behind the camera as the people in front of the camera. And my guess is that a script might read like a good comedy, but put the film together with the wrong director, editors (and yes, actors) and it can come out a mess... no matter how funny the script seems.

Maybe Toni Collette just needed a break from searing portrayals of grief.
