Come watch MeFi's Own™ theodolite on Jeopardy! on Wednesday, May 3!

(She is also really good at puzzles generally and crosswords specifically and is a wonderful artist! Such talent!)

I'd say good luck, but that would have to be a retroactive reachout to the universe.

I hope you had fun!

I am on social media an unhealthy amount of time and still didn't understand the final clue until I googled two components. (Perhaps because I'm not a consumer of that product.)

Anyway,Mefi represent!

I still don’t understand the final clue. I kind of got the “spice” part, but lost the thread after that.

Well played! I sure didn't know the answer to Final, or even how to start guessing.

I still don’t understand the final clue.

The KFC Twitter account follows exactly 11 other accounts: the five Spice Girls and six dudes named Herb. Eleven herbs and spices.

Hey!! Re. the final jeopardy question, I didn’t actually know about the original promotional tweet but sussed it out from the “11” and list of names. I’m still kind of reeling from this whole thing - being on the show was a blast and getting to watch it on TV is even better. Thank you phunniemee for posting!

Well...That was a commanding performance. Wow!

Woo, I couldn't watch Wednesday, but absolutely killing it today! Also, I went to the ACPT this year (just as a hanger on, not a competitor, heh) so very impressed at your success in the extremely serious fields of televised trivia and speedy crossword solving.

I'm not really a Jeopardy! watcher so are the upcoming shows the 2023 tournament shows and they'll resume with theodolite when that's over?
posted by Ivan Fyodorovich at 12:44 PM on May 7, 2023

Nevermind, I just saw the very end where it says theodolite will be on Monday.

Wow, I sucked at Friday's episode — didn't feel too bad though because even theodolite had trouble.

Is there any way to watch these if you don't have cable or local service?
posted by Pope Guilty at 9:49 PM on May 7, 2023

Pope, I think Jeopardy! has a YouTube channel, and I think they show the episodes, but on a day delay. I think.

Hannah pulled it out once again, and is now a 4-day champ! Nice little fist-pump at the end.
posted by Thorzdad at 5:16 PM on May 8, 2023 [5 favorites]

4 wins in a row - wow. I can't watch but that's fantastic. Sending good time-travelling luck.

Pope Guilty, the YouTube channel just seems to show Final Jeopardy and a few category clips, not whole shows. I don't think there's a way to watch other than over-the-air with your local ABC channel (or borrowing someone's YouTube Live or Hulu Live or SlingTV or etc login that gets network TV shows).

If you do a search for Jeopardy on You Tube with [date of show], there are usually bootleg shows with bad audio lags and quirks, but ... at least you can catch it if you miss the broadcast.

And it's exciting to watch Hannah win!

Hannah won again - this is so cool! Pretty sure she locked up a TOC slot at this point. Keep going, Hannah!

theodolite squeaked-out another win! It seemed she was going to be defeated in Final, though. The two challengers had the correct answer, but Hannah did not. But, there was a really confusing (to me) maths snafu that allowed her to prevail. I’m not good at math, let alone math on the fly, but I really didn’t understand challenger Raquel’s wager.
posted by Thorzdad at 3:35 AM on May 10, 2023

I really didn’t understand challenger Raquel’s wager.

It was a bad wager.

theodolite: $26,000
Raquel: $14,400
Joe: $5,800

If Raquel bets it all and gets it right, theodolite has to get over $28,800. That means theodolite has to bet $2,801 to put the game out of reach if she gets it right. If she gets it wrong, that means she'll have $23,199 (theodolite actually bet $3,000, which covers and doesn't drop her underneath any conceivable (good) bet that Raquel might make).

That means that Raquel needs to bet at least $8,800, which gets her to $23,600, which gets her over theodolite betting to cover. She could also bet $11,601, which gets her to $26,001, which gets her over theodolite betting $0. Now, theodolite shouldn't bet $0, but there's essentially no difference for Raquel between betting $8,800 or $11,601, or in fact betting all $14,400 -- Raquel has to get it right and theodolite has to get it wrong (assuming theodolite does not do a Clavin, which she clearly is not going to do either).

Instead, Raquel bet $8,000, which did not get her over theodolite betting to cover. It also wouldn't have kept her over Joe being right and doubling up (which he nearly did) if she had been wrong.

They're under a tremendous amount of pressure up there, but that was a bad bet, and Raquel is going to spend the rest of her life being mad at herself for it.

As an illustration of how easy it is to mess up the math, you can see that I messed up some of the math in my comment just now.
posted by Etrigan at 6:12 AM on May 10, 2023 [1 favorite]

I am rooting all in for mefi's own, but I feel really bad that Raquel messed up her wager. The win was hers to lose.

But yay, Hannah! Heading for the Tournament of Champions!

And the train just keeps on rollin'.

(I also could not pull FJ; I had no idea that [redacted] wasn't always just considered one country/colony.)
posted by Etrigan at 6:50 AM on May 11, 2023 [1 favorite]

I had the same confusion about FJ, too, Ertigan. I never knew it was at any time a bunch of separate colonies. But, the land mass part of the clue kind of made it the only possible choice I could come up with.

I am really enjoying Hannah’s chill-yet-warm demeanor throughout the games.

Sadly, I won’t be able to catch today’s match, so I’m hoping for another win so I can see her tomorrow night. Good luck!

Well, now we know what it looks like when theodolite gets locked in on the buzzer timing.
posted by Etrigan at 5:44 PM on May 12, 2023 [1 favorite]

Quite the dominating performance Friday.

I have to say, I'm enjoying theodolite's games a hell of a lot more than I am the Jeopardy! Masters matches, which are airing immediately following Jeopardy! this week. I seriously hope they don't import the "show where the Daily Doubles are to the home viewers" gimmick to the main show. It's a really dumb idea.
posted by Thorzdad at 6:19 AM on May 13, 2023 [3 favorites]

Nice runaway! I am enjoying the Masters series, but I don't care at all about revealing where the Daily Doubles are for the home viewers, and I think it's a little weird that anyone at home would care. But whatever. Keep at it, Superchamp!
posted by Daily Alice at 9:10 AM on May 13, 2023 [1 favorite]

Looks like Jeopardy! has thrown a curveball at theodolite today. A three-time winner who couldn’t make it back for his following appearance originally. That sucks.
posted by Thorzdad at 4:49 PM on May 15, 2023 [1 favorite]

Hannah, you did a great job, and like Thorzdad said, that was a real curveball. Psychologically, it had to be tough. We'll see you again in the TOC!

Ben was the previous champion whose run was cut short when he caught COVID. I wonder how the timing of his return was set - did they wait for someone on a run like Hannah's to bring him back? Tough opponent, but you kept your cool, Hannah, even towards the end. An 8-game run is excellent!
posted by mediareport at 7:52 PM on May 15, 2023 [2 favorites]

did they wait for someone on a run like Hannah's to bring him back?

Depending on exactly when he first tested positive, they waited somewhere between 15 and 29 days to bring him back (probably much closer to 15). This was the first episode taped on the first day he would have been available. They tape two week’s worth of shows on a Tuesday and Wednesday, then wait two weeks and repeat the process. He missed two tapings, presumably because he was either still testing positive or was still recovering two weeks after the first positive test (which jibes with my own experience). Or they might have a four-week minimum interval to be safe.

Congrats on a good solid run! I look forward to watching you in the Tournament of Champions!
posted by Daily Alice at 2:04 PM on May 16, 2023 [1 favorite]

Popping back in to say that it didn't seem quite fair to put Ben back in the middle of someone else's run, rather than against two newbies. Nonetheless, good for qualifying for the TOC!

As someone who has been trying to get on the show for years I'm curious, if you want to share it, about how many times you took the test, made it to the audition stage, etc..

Congrats on a good run, and I'd be interested in hearing about the process that got you there..
