May 10, 2024 6:46 AM - Season 1, Episode 1 - Subscribe

Physics professor and family man Jason Dessen is abducted from everything he loves.

A man is abducted into an alternate version of his life. Amid the mind-bending landscape of lives he could've lived, he embarks on a harrowing journey to get back to his true family and save them from a most terrifying foe: himself.

Poster's note:
No, not that Dark Matter, we already had a FanFare for that. And the subject matter is veering awfully close to Constellation, but it seems different enough to be interesting.

And since the show isn't being binge dropped, it might be useful to have separate posts? Always the uncertain question, y'know?

Anyway, the first episode is kind of ... I dunno, spoiled, by the trailer? Like they can't just say "hey, watch this 3 minute trailer and we'll save ourselves a whole lot of setup here", but the trailer definitely made the first episode kind of redundant. Still, it's interesting and well cast and hasn't caused my suspension of disbelief to be rammed by the ship of bad writing, so... Yay? Let's see where this goes?

Writing these posts is kind of fun - the other Dark Matter just sort of shows up in the list of TV shows, thankfully FF warns you that you're attempting to create a duplicate post.

I love seeing one of the McPoyles turn up in unexpected places.

So he started drawing that cat in a box picture in the last 5 minutes of a lecture? Amateur.

I'm finding the dialogue a bit ropey.

If you were designing an alarm system for a building, what benefit do you think you might see in having the external spotlights flash on and off?

Reminds me of the excellent Counterpart w/ JK Simmons. Hope this one has a resolution in mind, I'm liking it so far.

There was already a sci-fi (or SyFy) show called Dark Matter, and not even that long ago. Quit using the same damn titles for everything, Hollywood!

Based on the novel by Blake Crouch, to help explain why it’s called Dark Matter - that’s the name of the bestselling book. I see this is listed show only so I won’t get into it except to say I quite like Crouch’s stuff and look forward to this.

Why is it so hard to find out where things are streaming?

I’ve read a few of Blake Crouch’s books and seen several of the show adaptions (Whispering Pines, Good Behavior) and I always come away feeling disappointed. They tend to have super interesting concepts, and for the shows, generally really solid casting, but somehow the execution is always…off. The characters are shallower and less likable than they could be, the plots always go in a direction I don’t care for. I keep trying to like them, though.
