World of Glory (1991)

On the outskirts of a Swedish city, a crowd watches as naked men, women, and children are herded into a lorry and driven to their deaths. A plain, middle-aged man turns to the camera. He begins a guided tour of his life, showing his loveless marriage, dull job, and mundane day-to-day activities. A short film by Roy Andersson.

"Someone is screaming!"

Indeed.

So a man sees genocide happen. He says nothing, does nothing to stop it. Then he goes back to his crappy life and tries to go on as though the mundane patterns of his day mean something. They do not. Not anymore.

Roy Andersson is one of my favorite Swedish filmmakers (besides the usual suspects, and Tarik Saleh). I've seen all his movies, features and shorts, as well as many of the 400 commercials he directed during his 25 years self-exile from cinema**. This "Härlig är jorden" was the one he did as he returned. It's as bleak as a weekend spent with Rudolf Höss's real estate broker, or Hannah Arendt's shrink - "World of Gory", indeed. 10/10.

(**All except 'Gilliap', his 2nd movie, which was such a flop that he quit movie-making. If anybody knows where I can view it, I'll appreciate it.)
