Gods of Egypt (2016)
January 10, 2025 6:08 PM - Subscribe
A common thief joins a mythical god on a quest through Egypt.
(puts on Stefon voice)
"This movie has it all: a mostly white cast playing Egyptians, Gerard Butler woozily swimming in and out of his Scottish accent, Ser Jaime Lannister looking like the day after a male model bender, Geoffrey Rush in a look best described as Hobo Skin Cancer, Rufus Sewell ticking another villain box on his Nefarious Character Bingo Card and dodgy AF CGI."
I'm in Canada and it's streaming for free on Tubi. JustWatch says it's available for you Americans if you have Max/Prime or Apple TV.

I haven't seen this and if my plans for tomorrow fall through (and even if they don't), I am here for this. There are some "prestige" movies I could watch instead, but nah, after this week, I need to just turn my brain off. I'll check back in if/when I do.

Watching now.
While I don't have any formal training, I did work at the Oriental Institute (now called the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures) all through college and I can attest that so far this is all historically accurate. To the best of my memory.

Actually more than anything else I believe this movie is based on the Sims 3 World Adventures expansion pack.

The late lovely Chadwick Boseman as Thoth was the redeeming feature for me of this movie. And then I got sad that he left us too soon all over again.

I'm in the same field that Isis is these days, and we've talked over beers at conferences from time to time. It lines up with how she describes her first career. I kinda get how, overall, you'd pick being an associate professor in Iowa City over that.

I've just now realized that the gods bleed gold and that wasn't a dribble of hangover barf coming out of Horus' mouth in that first fight scene. 20 minutes from the end of the film.

Wow, thank you kitteh for the inspiring morning watch. While watching I ate a hearty and healthy breakfast, did a load of both laundry and dishes, and now I'm ready to face the world.

God [s of Egypt] help me, but I dig this deliciously cheesy ancient artifact.
It harks back to the fantasy adventure movies of yore, such as She or The Thief of Baghdad. It's not much different than what Lucas and Spielberg did with their memories of the old movie serials, but with the obvious difference that this type of homage is dreadfully out of fashion these days (qv: John Carter). Dive deep into this pool of melodrama, and prepare to surface reborn in an afterlife of corn.

I think Dark City is kind of a masterpiece, and I have no idea how the hell Alex Proyas made it. How did the guy who directed this and I, Robot ever get it together to make a movie that some critics put in the same league as stuff like Blade Runner and The Matrix? He seems like kind of a genre hack, a Dollar Tree Len Wiseman... but then, square in the middle of his filmography, there's this legit classic!

Mission accomplished. Fellow Egyptian mythology nerds, prepare to....well, just prepare.
