All Elite Wrestling: Dynamite: January 15, 2025: Maximum Carnage
January 15, 2025 4:49 PM - Season 6, Episode 16 - Subscribe

If tonight's Dynamite had a theme, it might be "returns", as Kenny Omega has his first (AEW) match since 2023, and The Hurt Business' MVP has his first (televised) match since an episode of Monday Night Raw in 2022. Then again, it might be "consequences", since Mariah May's opponent for Grand Slam Australia will be determined in a Casino Gauntlet, and HOOK will finally get in a ring with Christian Cage.

Tonight's announced card:
AEW World Championship Match: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Powerhouse Hobbs
Kenny Omega vs. Brian Cage
Christian Cage vs. HOOK
Women's Casino Gauntlet Match: Winner challenges Mariah May for the Women's World Championship at Grand Slam Australia
Trios Match: Private Party & Mark Briscoe vs. The Hurt Syndicate (MVP, Shelton Benjamin & Bobby Lashley)
We'll hear from Ricochet following his bloody attack on Swerve Strickland

Choice MST3K-style riffing from my watching group already:

"Brian Cage looks like Super Saiyan Matt Cardona!"

Excalibur: (as Brian Cage casually deadlifts Kenny Omega) Kenny has had surgery, several feet of his intestine removed!
"...And it's made him so much lighter!"

After Kenny gets his victory, the show restages the finale of last week's Dynamite, where the Don Callis Family goes for the post-match castigo and Will Ospreay makes the save, except this time it goes further, with Takeshita showing up to wave his title belt around and remind us that he has two victories over Kenny.

Meanwhile Will and Kenny have the makings of a good super-group, and I seem to recall The Young Bucks have those cool new IWGP tag titles....

It's interesting to me that Jeff Jarrett can take the fact that MJF is a wrestling fan, a mark from way back in the day who knows the history, and turn it back around on him. It shows that JJ has Max's number by poking him in his fears of inferiority.

BUT

Who wrote this promo? Why would it be a good idea for Jarrett to run down MJF's parents -- even his own mother has gone on the record saying he sucks -- and also sully the good name of Alicia Atout?

HOOK vs. Christian was going OK, with Hook having to modify his offense to protect his injured arm, and Taz trying very hard not to leap out of his seat to assist. But it ends a lot hotter, with the return of Samoa Joe, and suddenly Hook, Joe and Shibata makes an excellent trio to match the Patriarchy.

Megan Bayne is here for the Casino Gauntlet! This is a tremendous upgrade from Kamille, and I hope she sticks around. The outcome wasn't really in doubt -- were we really not going to have Toni Storm as the hometown hero when AEW makes it's Australia debut? -- but I'm intrigued that Mariah made sure to mention Anna Jay on commentary. If only this promotion could somehow see it's way to more than one women's match per episode.

No one seriously expected Moxley to lose today, which meant that the crowd was only lukewarm for the title match. Hobbs still looks strong in defeat, but Mox feels less like a warlord and more like a chickenshit braggart every time he requires intervention from every single member of his Death Riders to secure victory.

What’s his characterization right now? All his speeches are about how he’s not interested in the title on its own, and he’s hiding it in Marina Shafir’s briefcase because he wants to draw everyone’s focus towards making AEW less about characters and celebrity and more about combat. Meanwhile he has his own special type of entrance and currently the most elaborate promos, so is this projection? Are the mechanics of producing a wrestling show undercutting his point deliberately or only accidentally?

Also, side note: Marina Shafir is throwing a lot of strikes on men, in a promotion that has never yet (to the best of my knowledge) had an Intergender match. Is she ever getting in the ring for herself again, and if so is there anyone to stand opposite her? Rated FTR is opposing the Death Riders at the moment, but they don’t have a woman for the Designated Girl Fight vs. Marina.

Side note to the side note: Does Marina just… follow Mox everywhere? Is she in a throuple with him and Renee Paquette? because Renee has said nothing at all (in character) about this scary silent muscular woman following her husband everywhere.
