Shameless (US): El Gran Cañon
February 28, 2015 3:42 PM - Season 3, Episode 1 - Subscribe

Frank is stuck in Mexico without a passport. Debbie is the only one who seems to care that Frank has been missing for 137 days. She’s made a shrine to him with a bottle of Old Style beer.

Fiona and Jimmy argue over how Jimmy is taking care of the kids — he gave Carl two popsicles for breakfast. After Fiona leaves for work, Jimmy is watching Liam, but Estefania’s dad, Nando, pulls Jimmy away. Nando fatally shoots Marco in front of Estefania and Jimmy in their home. Later, on a boat, Nando tells Jimmy he needs to be Estefania’s husband “when immigration comes,” while Nando shoots a machine gun at a watermelon in the air over the lake. Jimmy also can’t “get into any trouble,” but he wonders: “How am I supposed to make a living?”

Fiona talks Meg into letting her try assistant managing by promoting a night at Meg’s club. Fiona has to pay $1,000 upfront.

Lip and Ian steal scientific equipment and run away from the police. Ian escapes, leaving Lip to fight the police. Lip gets arrested and sentenced to community service. Lip uses the stuff he stole to build a remote-control robot, which he sends into battle.

Kev and V roleplay Thomas Jefferson and his slave for a webcam.

Frank sneaks back into the US with a fake passport by smuggling drugs in his anal cavity. “Thank you, Sheila!”

Great start to the season. I'm a little curious as why Debbie was the only one who was missing her father; why didn't Carl? Was it because he was male and didn't want to display any vulnerability? Suffered more physical or emotional abuse than Debbie?

I don't think that's it — as I said when Lip left:
Carl, in a rare display of strong emotion, runs outside and yells for Lip to come back.
In the episode where Frank disappears to Canada, the whole family immediately becomes distraught and won't rest till he returns. Isn't that inconsistent with this episode? But maybe the explanation is that he's been in Mexico for months — they were initially upset, but by now, they've come to accept it.

Debbie was depicted as the most caring toward Frank from the very beginning: in the pilot, while Frank is passed out on the living room floor, Debbie goes downstairs at night just to put a pillow under his head.
