Naïve funeral worker Nino Manfredi meets the daughter of a state executioner. Both are social outcasts because of their dreaded associations with death, so they are pushed toward each other, to marry and start a family. In order to win the right for a new government apartment, meek Manfredi is being lured to take over his father-in-law’s job, and the time eventually comes when he has to perform a gruesome killing by garroting his first ‘customer’.
A classic Spanish dark comedy, directed by Luis García Berlanga. A scathing critique of Franco-era values. With delightful old actor José Isbert, whose character of Amadeo carries the plot.
The trailer on The Criterion Channel.
4.0 on Letterboxd.
7.9 on IMDb.
Criterion essay, By the neck.
