Dying for Sex: Good Value Diet Soda   Show Only

Based on the podcast of the same name, it follows a woman, Molly, who's been diagnosed with terminal cancer and has one thing on her bucket list: having an orgasm with another person. [CW: lots of sex, cancer]

The series is based on the real-life story of Molly Kochan, who created the podcast with her friend, Nikki Boyer. (Given the premise of the series, and the fact that we're talking about a real-life person, I'm not sure that spoiler alerts are even needed or relevant here, but be warned that some of the things that might be posted here could indeed give away the ending, or at least the basic facts thereof.) I've only seen the first episode so far but it was enough to bump this series to the front of the line. Stars Michelle Williams and Jenny Slate. On FX/Hulu. Listeners/enjoyers of the podcast may want to do a "Books Included" thread.

This show is so incredibly good, incredibly moving.

While it is not aiming for pure realism and some scenes, scenarios and characters are deliberately exaggerated or simplified, and of course, most of the actors are unrealistically extremely conventionally attractive, this still has the most realistic sex scenes I can recall seeing on a show.

Deeply feminist, humane, moving.

My one beef is the black characters are very much positioned as magical negro caretakers of the heroine rather than their own people (although Esco Jouley is very charismatic and compelling and there is some effort to establish their independent life and interests. Nothing wrong with their character, only wrong within the larger context of what black characters get to do in film and TV in a broader way).

Lots of great performances but Michelle Williams was absolutely incredible.

Interested to hear others takes on this show?

We started this last night, and really love it. The first episode is so damned maddening, being full of men who don’t see women. Steve is especially punchable. But, wow, the way Molly takes hold of her life is quite inspiring.

And, man, I would kill to be invited to a potluck like that!

Finished this tonight and, wow, what a show. The last episode, especially. Man. Do not miss this show.
