MeFi Horror Film Club, #8: Re-Animator

Next up is Stuart Gordon's 1985 cult classic Re-Animator!

DirtyOldTown randomly selected me to produce a Wild Card movie for week 8, and I responded by selecting the crowd-pleasingest horror movie I know. Plus, I'm still traumatized by Martyrs...

Quoth iMDb:

A dedicated student at a medical college and his girlfriend become involved in bizarre experiments centering around the re-animation of dead tissue when an odd new student arrives on campus.

Sounds legit! Re-Animator is on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and probably other places? The answer to "Can I stream it?" is an emphatic yes.

Nice one! I can totally get into re-watching that movie. I'm overdue.

Oh, man, me too. It's been a long time since I've seen it. This will be fun. And yeah, people, go stream it and give old Stuart a little cash, I think he might need it, he's not done much lately except, um, a stage musical version of Re-Animator? I could go for that, I guess.

By the way, I don't know what version is available for streaming, but the director's preferred cut is the unrated version, which is, unusually, also the shortest, at 86 minutes. There's a 95 minute R-rated version, which has a lot more dialog and stuff, but that doesn't add much, then there's a 95 minute slightly different TV version, with less gore, and a 104-minute "integral version", which is a combination of all the material in all the versions, including the gore and nudity in the unrated cut, but that one really drags, from what people say.

I'll be watching the 86 minute unrated version myself. This is not really the kind of movie that needs a bunch of exposition.

I'd go one step further and argue that the 95 minute version isn't worth watching. If you're going to spend an hour and a half with Re-Animator, you should see Re-Animator, and the R-rated version is both draggy and missing much of the imaginative action that helps make the film so special.

The version on Netflix is listed as 1 hour, 25 minutes...I guess it must be the director's cut. Is there an easy way to distinguish between the two? Something like "if the second scene is this, it's the director's cut".

Thanks to that link, I can say that the version on Netflix is definitely the director's cut.

Director's cut of 86 minutes it is, then. Excellent.

The version on Amazon is also 1 hour, 26 minutes.

Yeah, the Amazon version is the director's cut, too.

I just finished watching this , and pretty much everything about it is wonderful. I mean, of course the serum is glowing yellow, why wouldn't it be?

Anyway, I have made some bad judgment calls in my life, but Dan takes the cake. Sure, creepy guy who looooooves the basement can move in with me. Sure, I will be on creepy guy who murdered my cat's side rather than my girlfriend's. Yes, good idea to go to the morgue and reanimate a corpse. Oh yeah, the dean is dead, but his corpse is so fresh. Sure, let's reanimate his corpse. Creepy roommate now wants to inject himself with the liquid so he can forgo sleep? Of course I will help, why not? All hell broke loose and my girlfriend is dead? Fuck it, let's reanimate her, too.

Dan might need to spend some time thinking about the decisions he has been making. He is headed down the wrong path.
