The Good Wife: Lies
November 8, 2015 9:09 PM - Season 7, Episode 6 - Subscribe
There's NSA, goats, lie detectors, eavesdropping, secret video, presidential announcements, investigations, and Peter feeling like a wet seal.
This episode features:
(a) Fainting goats.
(b) Singing/screaming goats
(c) The NSA guys getting a loophole to listen to Alicia again
(d) Because she's in contact with "the next Snowden," Jeff Dillinger, getting his assistance via phone from Iceland on a case involving lie detectors, an app called Spoiler, and the NSA.
(e) Alicia is also concerned about Jason the investigator--Lucca gets an eyewitness from the fight saying it was just pushing and shoving, Alicia is told by the judge that Jason is a straight up sociopath who seems normal and charming until he snaps. who to believe?
(f) At Lockhart Whoever, an African-American woman named Monica applies for a job. Diane and Howard are for her, but Cary and David complain she's underqualified compared to the three white guys they want to hire. Diane tries to break the news to Monica in person nicely...and gets an undercover video Monica made in response. Poor Monica.
(g) Ruth wants Eli to announce his candidacy looking exactly like how Obama did it. This doesn't go so well, especially the part where Alicia and Peter are boiling in overcoats.
(h) Eli can't decide whether or not to screw Peter over by getting that voting machine thing outed, because it would also screw Alicia over.
(Pardon the shortness of this review, got a phone call in the middle of watching.)
Notable moments:
"What's the best thing about Peter?" Eli needs a quote from Alicia. Do you need it to be true? "True-adjacent."
* Eli and Ruth drinking Alabama slammers.
* Eli borrowing from The Usual Suspects about how the most powerful men are the ones nobody knows exist.
* "Peter wants to be president..." "I need a drink," says Alicia. Also, why does Eli break this news to her and never Peter? As she makes a margarita, she asks Eli, "You judging me?" "No." "That sounds like a judgmental huh." Alicia also says to Eli, "You're scheming something here. Cheers."
* "I don't punch people." "Maybe you should start." --Alicia and Jason.
* "Are you Nigerian or what?" "What." "Hey, you're a sassy one, aren't you?" -Howard and Monica during an interview. Howard votes for her because she's suffered, like his people.
* "Can I come out from under the blanket now?" --Alicia making her first call to Jeff.
* "Here we have the common touch." "And the common smell." --Peter and Landau on announcing in a gym.
* "I'm like a wet seal with sweat." -Peter.

I'm wondering if the revelation of Peter's involvement in the vote-rigging is a sign that the series will end full circle, with Peter in prison and Alicia standing by him. The symmetry of the number of words in the episode names seems like a clue pointing that way.
Also, hey, the NSA dude is Jared from Silicon Valley!

I just realized that all of Jared's surveillance countermeasures with the burner phone and blanket were totally useless and the NSA had him identified by name in their network.

Have they confirmed this is the last season, though? What are they gonna do with titles if they get renewed?

I can't figure out what Eli's end game was. Was it using Frank Landau to introduce Peter and then having the voting machine rigging come to light on the same day just to embarrass Peter? Except that Peter was implicated so Eli didn't want to go that far? It doesn't make sense that the judge would know this but not Eli. And then Eli was staring at Alicia while Peter was giving his speech and he seemed to see something in her face.
Yeah, Eli thought he was just implicating Frank Landau. He set up Frank to introduce Alicia, fully expecting that Ruth would scoop Frank so that she could look good and make Eli look bad; then when Eli leaked the info about Frank, Ruth would probably get fired by Peter for having made the now-terrible decision to have Frank Landau be his introduction (on top of the whole gym fiasco, not sure how much of that Eli arranged). It would be bad for Peter's campaign but not crippling; introducing Peter's complicity into the mix, though, changes the calculus and makes it a potentially campaign-ending scandal instead of just something that gets Ruth fired.
When Eli was staring at Alicia, it wasn't Peter giving the speech, it was Frank Landau giving his introductory speech. Not sure exactly what he saw in her face, but remember that Alicia (foolishly IMO) agreed to some backroom deal with Frank while Eli was out of the room - the intense distaste on Alicia's face when she was looking at Frank may have given Eli some insight into that, maybe? Not sure, but she definitely giving Landau the evil eye then.
I am entertained the NSA guys are back (and classy as ever) but oh god do I not ever need screaming goats in my life. Not ever.
I'm wondering if the revelation of Peter's involvement in the vote-rigging is a sign that the series will end full circle, with Peter in prison and Alicia standing by him.
I'm wondering if it'll go the other way - the series ending with Peter facing an enormous scandal (yet again) and Alicia finally deciding not to be The Good Wife and telling him to go to hell.

Oh right, I forgot that part so that makes sense, he wants to get her fired so he can come back.
Alicia's deal was that "first vote" thing which should be coming up soon.
I'm not that interested in determining whether Jason is a sociopath or not. I mean, how do you prove it one way or another?

This episode was more fun to me than most of the season to date. I loved that three different people called Eli out on his scheming. And I'm glad the NSA is back. I feel like the two guys who are listening in on Alicia reflect back my enjoyment of the show ("If she's stressed, it's over what's his name being shot.")

I never know what the NSA boys are after but the goat jokes are funny. As was the video of Dillinger with the changing backgrounds.
Actually if Eli just wanted to cause embarrassment at Peter's big announcement, he could've arranged for the fake backdrop to fall down. Here is the original Obama declaration which I'd never seen; TGW forgot to bring the kids.
